stolen from the net

The peak of sexual excitement, characterized by strong feelings of pleasure and by a series of involuntary contractions of the muscles of the genitals, usually accompanied by the ejaculation of semen by the male. Also called climax.

I heard that the female orgasm is so the contractions help the sperm on it's journey

Yup that is right....muscle contractions in both the male and female are 0.7 seconds apart and in sync with each other. This helps push the sperm into the cervix after it is deposited in the vagina.

It's obviously an evolutionary advantage for sex (and hence reproduction) to be pleasurable as it means we would have sex more often.

All organisms that reproduce by internal fertilisation have an orgasm in the sense of some mechanism to help propel the gametes from the male into the uterus of the female (involuntary contractions of muscle in the case of humans for example). Whether all mammals have the feeling of pleasure associated with this is another question.

I suppose that with animals with higher brain functions such as humans, it would be advantegous for sex to be pleasurable as it would make us choose to copulate and hence reproduce more often.

As for other more 'simple' organisms that copulate as a result of innate behavioural patterns, there would not be any advantage to the sensation being pleasurable and so it may not be. This is because they would copulate anyway (because of 'instinct').

We should really keep you away from the farm..

biologically the chance of conception is increased when female orgasm occurs. something to do with one of the chemicals that's produced provides really good conditions for the sperm... we watched a (very graphic) video about it in psychology last year.

Yup there are several secretions that are released during orgasm that make the normally highly acidic conditions of the vagina more favourable to sperm. Some of these secretions also thin the mucus that lines the vagina and cervical opening to allow easier passage of sperm.

no its true. theres alot of similarity between pigs and humans hence why the pig's heart can be used in transplants
