Pro smoking arguments.

Hey I have been roped into a debate at school, which is fine but i have to argue in favour of smoking and the only points i can think of are: Taxes and Civil liberties to choose to kill yourself slowly!

Actually... sure you should be on any side?

Well, yes. But I don't really think examples are required to illustrate the concept of things being enjoyable...

If you're going to be debating, going off on odd tangents like that won't get you very far, although if you're running out of ideas I suppose it may be decent padding.

People enjoy it.

I find it's part of the culture as well; it's the norm to be in a pub, then everyone gets up and goes out for a fag.

Well it provides thousands of jobs in the UK. I guess one could argue that, and it would be a topical point, however unlikely that being their actual reasons for smoking.

OT

Now I'm only 20, so can't think of being condescending. But I think that shows how times have changed very rapidly, considering that that is the norm.

The revenue generated by tax on the tabacco which goes to the government?

'Social smoking' can bond people together?

A fit girl asks for a light and you give her one, good excuse to talk to her?

Only arguments I could think of...

At least it might kill some people who are in favour of smoking, and that might make everyone else see it wasn't such a good idea to smoke in the first place. So in that way, smoking could be very effective.

If people continue smoking, then more people die younger. This will save the NHS from spending money on old-age diseases, as the NHS is stretched already, and it's getting worse because of our aging population. Although i dunno, this could be balanced out by the money spent on treatment for smoking related diseases.

I'm a smoker, but i don't really care for these types of arguments.

I don't smoke but I assume the social side of it is quite big? I guess people get speaking out in the smoking areas.

Helps you lose weight.
Gives you something to do with your hands (the other thing...).
Supports our NHS through taxes and possible organ donations when you pop your clogs.
It helps out third world countries by giving them something to sell.
It's cool if you're a chav.
You can miss 5 minutes of work every couple of hours.

It can be quite a good social thing like alcohol, sometimes at parties and things someone will offer you a cig to break the ice and a lot of people say they are 'social' smokers.

[i dont agree but im trying to think of another argument for you]

Yes, because the NHS desperately needs smoker's lungs.

this x1000. i don't smoke, but i will regularly join debates on the pro-smoking side just coz all the people who have strong feelings against it tend to be total arses about the whole thing and act all high and mighty.
