Changing flats

Is second semester too late to move flats?
I just don’t gel with my flatmates at all. I have been going out with them and socialising with them the whole time but now I’ve stopped because I feel singled out. I’ve started avoiding them and I just feel uncomfortable around them. Something happened one night which made me really upset and I told my friends from home and they said I should move flats. I’m not sure if it would be too late on in the year tho? Since everyone will already know each other

Hi there,
Sorry to hear you're feeling uncomfortable around your current flatmates. I would say that it's not too late in the year to look at alternative accommodation or moving flats. For example, people who are doing semester stays may move into flats later in the year or some people who have requested to move flats early on may find that one doesn't become available until late into the academic year.

Regardless of the reasoning, it's better to not feel uncomfortable and if there is no resolution to what is going on between you and your flatmates, I would recommend reaching out to your accommodation team and seeing if moving flats is an option.

Hope this helps!

Hey,
I am in exactly the same situation as you and I was feeling very left out in my flat and awkward around flatmates who all seem to get on really well. I just recently got an offer to move flats and I am going to take it, even though it is late in the semester you still have time to turn things around and enjoy the rest of the year with new flatmates who might be more welcoming or make you feel comfortable given you may be a new flatmate! If you really don’t know what else to do this might be a great opportunity and taking this chance might actually improve things so you will never know until you’ve tried.

I hope that hearing someone in a similar experience who is nervous to move to a new flat so late but has a good feeling that this might improve my uni experience a lot! Wish you good luck and hope you become more comfortable whether you choose to move or to stay.

Hey! Thank you for your message. It was really nice to hear someone else in the same boat. I actually moved flat last week and it’s a lot better. I’ve not actually met all of my flatmates yet, I don’t know if they maybe just keep to themselves more. The ones I have met are really nice tho! I’ve been worrying about it a bit because I don’t know them all yet but I definitely feel more comfortable. It’s also a mixed gender flat now which I think seems better. I was in all girls before and it felt really *****y. I hope you get on well in your new flat! Let me know how it goes.
