Coughing up... stuff?

It's sort of... nasty and disgusting, but it's starting annoy me now and i have no idea what it is.

Every now and then, when i swallow, i feel something in the back of my throat and it leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. I can't swallow it, and drinking water doesnt help so my only option is to cough it up. Well, i don't really cough it up, it's more of a "regurgitate" type action.

I don't know what it is i am coughing up, it's kind of a soft, squishy solid material, with a beige/white colour. It doesnt usually bother me that much, as usually there is so little of it i just spit it into the sink and get a glass of water, but just now i coughed up quite a large peice of this unknown material.

Sorry for the grossness, but i was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this, or if anybody knows what is wrong with me?

Oh and just for the record, i am not a smoker, so i don't think it is anythingrelated to that.

the white gooey stuff you cough (phlegm) is a natural thing. However if its brown or overly green or yellow and/or bitty and/or nasty tasting, could be a sign of a chest infection so i would advise seeing someone

AND if its more solid than usual, another possible symptom of a chest infection (most likely)

Never mind what exactly your coughing up, lets take a look at your logic...

'I'm coughing up disgusting ****... I'll tell THE INTERNET!!!'

Doctor? No... Friend? No... Parents? No... People i dont know who will probably be mean to me? YEAH!

:woo:

EDIT: Yeah, its probably a chest infection.

yeh, what fandellos said, if it is green or very yellow then go see a doctor because that indicates there are neutrophils in it and so you have an inflammatory response (usually a chest infection) - who knew i could actually revise on tsr?!

It's normally related to colds, as it's designed to trap bacteria you inhale and enable you to excrete (? right word?) it.

Anyway, if you just have a cold, or a cough, don't worry, it'll subside soon.

If it gets really bad or is persistent for a month or so, I'd recommend seeing your doctor.

Actually it sounds more like tonsil stones...
This?
Could require a trip to the doctor depending on the cause but I occasionally get them and they always go away pretty quickly.

Nothing to worry about :nah:

Probably just an onset of a chest infection (although tbh, I have these symptoms with a bog standard cold)...

If you are concerned though, you know where to go :p:

not excrete, the cillia move the mucus up from the lungs and it traps bacteria etc. as it goes before being swallowed down to the stomach where it is destroyed by the acid int he stomach. it is part of the innate immune system and is a protective mechanism

Hmm OP, does this thing you cough up have the same feel as cooked pasta and smell vile?
A friend coughed something very similar the other day. He has no idea what it is but its been happening for years he said "every so often it happens" and nothing has happened to him. He simply spat it into the sink and washed away not a care in the world lmao

I've found Vicks vapour rub helps. And baths where you can inhale the steam.

I know some mucus does that, but I would have thought this was different as you generally cough it up, or is that simply because of the excess amount?

Yeah, sounds exactly right, used to get them all the time when I was younger.
