To apply to any of our Colleges for Engineering, you will need A levels/IB Higher Levels (or the equivalent) in:

Mathematics

Physics

Further Mathematics to AS or A level if your school offers it.

It only says 'can' and if you have other things e.g EPQ or great super curriculars you can get an offer. Cambridge isn't ideal for Engineering anyway - no year in industry for a start. Despite its protestations the course is outdated.

I am currently in year 11 and am wanting to study physics, maths and further maths at A-level. The 6th form are saying this won’t be enough to get into a Russell group university, they say I’ll need a 4th as I am studying further maths. Another school in the area and a career advisor say differently. I would prefer to study for 3 to get the best possible results, I am wanting to study maths or engineering at uni. I would appreciate any advice?

Hi there,

3 A Levels are definitely enough and make an informed choice based on the A-Level combinations for you uni course you want to do.

There is a misconception that doing 4 - or even 5 - A-Levels gets you further ahead. However this comes at the expense of grades. the jump between GCSE and A-Level is challenging. I would focus on doing 3 A-Levels you actually want to do, than a fourth one that you aren't interested in. AAB is better than BBBB. Quality over quantity!

Kind regards, Jenifer (Kingston rep)

hello! i’m in yr13 and i do these exact alevels, and i’ve only applied to russel group universities for EEE (electrical and electronic engineering). so far i’ve gotten into 3 (KCL, QMUL and Bath), and i’m waiting on UCL and imperial. so it’s definitely possible to get into russel group universities with only 3 alevels!! focus on them, get the best grades possible. most unis will prefer 3A*s over 4As. especially for engineering, most unis will want an A* in maths. don’t do 4 if you don’t want to! hope this helps

Did you end up getting offers from UCL and imperial
