Work experience aerospace/mechanical engineering

I am doing my GCSEs this summer and want to do some work experience afterwards. I can't find many companies offering work experience programmes for aerospace engineering. I applied to Leonardo Helicopters 3 weeks ago and they still haven't got back to me so I'm assuming that's not happening. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Are you looking for a formal programme only? I can't imagine many companies would have such a thing. What about contacting local companies directly to see if you can get some sort of work experience?

When I was your age, I experienced the similar problem: large aerospace businesses don't usually respond, especially when a lot of kids apply. Instead of focusing only on the major names, consider smaller local engineering firms. It's still a great experience, even though it's more mechanical than aerospace. Additionally, you may email nearby airports or airplane maintenance firms and simply inquire; occasionally, they don't post job openings, but they will respond if you do.
I occasionally check flying411.com to see what companies are in the aviation industry; you might find some ideas there. It's a numbers game, so just keep trying and sending emails. Something is going to happen!
Hi shbee,

Getting work experience after GCSEs is definitely harder, as most large companies only hire interns at undergraduate level, and even those places are competetive. From an engineering perspective though, cars and planes are similar enough at a GCSE level, so if you wanted things to add to your CV reaching out to local garages to ask for internships or part time work might be an idea, this will also help with thinking through the problem solving required for aerospace whilst getting used to the materials and the structure of engines. From personal experience, aerospace or engineering companies such as BAE and Rolls Royce value this type of experience as it really helps later when taking designs and making them realistic in terms of materials and safety.

I also don't know if this is an opportunity for exposure near you but AirCadets could be of help with getting in touch with some plane companies,

best of luck!
