hi im currently in first year doing orthoptics at Liverpool. in my year there is about 50 of us. it seems small but it means everyone knows each other and you're always with the same people so become very close with everyone doing it

When i had my interview i asked how many students there would be in the cohort for 2024 they said it’s usually 50 but can lower due to people dropping out etc

we should! but I can’t seem to find anyone else on here who’s doing orthoptics
Hey,

Congrats on your offer!

50 people per year sounds about right, but my current year we have 33. It's nice because you become familiar with most of the people.

Any questions hit me up on here or @livuniorthoptics on IG to answer any queries.

Hi thank you for that last response! Had another question, I was wondering how many days are you usually on campus for?
Hi, unfortunately my last message got deleted so I will write a mellowed version of my experience at uni of Liverpool doing orthoptics and why I did leave

lessons I found not interactive at all as mainly lessons were just powerpoint lessons with teacher just reading it unless it was the clinical practical lessons which most the time you are sat there lost what to do as you usually have a teacher who you are not familiar not really properly going through the steps properly

placements you will be placed in random locations even as far as Ireland you are unlikely going to go with your friend etc as they told us its randomised... its very daunting at 18 being told you need to go Ireland for 4 weeks a week before the placement start date which also adds the issue that it is extremely expensive the hotel costs you get £55 a night reimbursed a month laterI think according to the nhs website it is £85 a night now but even then usually this won't cover the cost especially if you are randomly placed in London lets say in the summer where rooms I heard from other students costed nearly £200 a night... the problem faced with this is if you told to go to Ireland even if you found a hotel that is within £85 a night budget over 4 weeks this would cost you £2.4k with travel around £3k which many people do not have sat in their bank accounts especially after uni halls are paid + food + day to day living expense they will say that they will support you but this is according to parents income and even they are not going to give you 3 grand to cover costs... placements over the 3 years you have 9 all together which are all4 weeks except from the 1st and 2nd placement which are 1 to 2 weeks. I wish I could write about my experience at the placements but unfortunately I think the message would be deleted again but lets just say there is definitely an imbalance of power, you feel very isolated if you come across a problem as the university will always take the placements side not students also due to having heavy placements right before exams it is very hard to revise for these exams as placement day starts from8:20 am to 5:00 pm so you are extremely tired to revise in a small hotel room

whilst at the university unfortunately there not much support there, the year group usually consists of around 40 people but usually a lot of people leave hence why by the time they graduate there is only 15-20 people left its not for everyone orthoptics you definitely need thick skin and try and manage everything but at 18 it is extremely overwhelming

Unfortunately orthoptics there isn't much information out there regarding it and when asking the orthoptics rep I felt as if I was sold a dream when in reality it wasn't there is definitely an imbalance of power between students + teachers & students + placement tutors I cant get into details again regarding this but this is my honest opinion and I definitely should be entitled to my opinion
