Reuben College Oxford

I was recently accepted into a master’s program at Oxford. I did not get my first choice college and was instead allocated to Reuben College. I’m not in a STEM-related subject, though the college is overwhelmingly STEM-focused, and looking at their term card, I do not see any social events. The events are mainly seminars or discussions with fellows. I’m wondering if there is anyone on here that can speak to the social life at Reuben? Or if there is anyone else in the same boat who would like to chat?

I am in a similar position, I got pooled to Reuben as well and cannot find out much about it, nor if they have a GCR at all. So I am comparably worried and considering if it is worth rejecting Oxford on the basis of the college.

I am also considering this route; I am upset about Reuben as a non-STEM student.

Did you decide to accept or reject? I accepted after talking to some people. It seems like your college is less important for postgrad.

How did you get on in Reuben in the end? Do you think you made the right choice?

Also curious, because I have been made an offer as a social sciences student and share these concerns.

Hi, current Reuben student here 🙂 True! There are not many social sciences students - but everyone is super nice! In the end you get to mix with a lot of biomedical students and also some more math/cs students but it is not overwhelming. You have your department to get to know social sciences people. I find Reuben super friendly and you also get allocated to SS sub-group of the college so its easier to get to know your fellow students 🙂

hi! thanks for your reply. Glad to hear you're happy. I was a bit disappointed in the sense that I would love to experience the 'traditional oxford uni vibe' and was hoping it is for example possible to join a formal hall dinner at another college once in a while. Do you know if that is common practice or not really?

Does anyone happen to know how the graduate college allocation process works? It’s clear that I’ve been rejected by St John’s, but my program is quite a traditional humanities one, and I just received an offer from Reuben. This makes me wonder what kind of reasons they might have for giving me a place there instead of transferring me to another college…

Oh I was in the same boat! But honestly it doesn't matter much - you can join formal hall dinners from other colleges if you make friends with someone, there are also college "swaps" where you can attend formals at other colleges 🙂

Guess we're in the same boat then. Also wondering whether I'll still be considered for scholarships at other colleges after I've been made an offer by Reuben - they do not have scholarships for which I'm eligible I'm afraid

Did you still find that you experienced and were immersed in that ‘traditional sense’ of Oxford despite being at Reuben ?

Yes you would be, if you secure a scholarship at another college you would be moved there

Welcome any other views on Reuben! I'm debating between going here or to Cambridge for similar programs, but my college is Trinity!

From what I’ve seen: Reuben is the newest college it kind of moves away from that ‘traditional’ aspect of Oxford compared to other colleges - both in building, customs, formals etc. but still keeps some of that traditional feel! It’s unique, has regular talks called dining with dinosaurs and seems to be a friendly tight knit college. Mostly stem/AI orientated with a graduate only community. Previously mentioned in past threads is that it’s notoriously difficult to get accommodation so keep that in mind if you haven’t secured a room already. Overall it seems nice. Don’t know too much about trinity but have heard it’s one of the more prestigious colleges. Cambridge and Trinity college is incredibly well respected and you’d prolly get more of that ‘traditional’ vibe. Overall check out the website and hopefully someone who’s studied at Reuben can give more!
