keele and sunderland definitely, have manchester changed their selection process? i know they have the naif, but my understanding is that it's just a tool they use at interview as one of the mmi stations - they have a straight ucat cutoff, as long as u have sjt band 1/2

You are absolutely right about Manny, sorry. Better examples would be Keele, Sunderland and Cardiff which does some wierd screening thing with it. Also Leicester if you are borderline or contextual.

Could I ask what Leicester does for contextual students as I am hoping to apply?

Sorry, have only just seen this.
Leicester give some really clear information about how they treat applications, and I would encourage anybody to read their application policy, FAQs and very importantly, their scoring details in depth to see what they say and how it might affect you. However, having said that they say slightly differing things about the PS depending on which document you read. Ranging from, we don’t look at it in these circumstances, we don’t look at what you do but are interested on how you REFLECT on it (important), to something that looks like “contextual applicants will have their whole application assessed”.

The key thing is that for borderline applicants (for both pre sift and at post offer interview stage) they say that they will look at the whole application. They do this in concert with contextual markers if appropriate. It is not clear tbh how in detail they actually do this and how often they do this in detail, but the fact that they say it, gives them to give them the flexibility to do this.

The things they are looking to see in a PS (apart from reflection) are buried at the bottom of the scoping document and there is a list of about 6 things they will be looking at (marking on?). So personally I would encourage anybody applying to Leicester to give these some thought even if not contextual as you don’t know if you will be borderline before sift or post interview.

Also, given this is the re-applicants, resit and gap year thread, read the application policies and the faq and scoping documents for 2025 on the LE website in great detail. Go direct to the source as it has changed this year in the scoring side.

For examples, resits not allowed, unless mitigating circumstances agreed in advance before application, the deadlines for these are much earlier than the standard deadlines). If you take three years for A levels your pre sift scoring will be adjusted, but it doesn’t say how, but I suspect not increased!. Also if you are a re applicant it always used to be that there were changes in the scoring depending on the stage you were unsuccessful previously. But I didn’t spot that this year in a quick skim read, but you will need to check if it’s just buried somewhere else.

Lastly though if you are a gap year candidate(no resits) and have the grade minima, they will guarantee you an interview if you are in the top 5 UCAT deciles this year. So worth knowing if you fall into that category. But still, learn the scoring matrix (from top to bottom of the doc!) anyway.

https://le.ac.uk/study/medicine/applying

The scoring document is a pdf (check you have the right one - I was referring to the 2025 a100 above) is buried under the scoring for interview sub heading towards the bottom. Keep an eye on it and check the publication date and check closer to the date, just in case any changes creep in. They have in the past…

Also read the offer stage sub bullet.

Just read the lot basically, as with all med schools and click all the links !

Sorry, would also say, if you have contextual markers, see if you also qualify for the UCAT bursary, this isn’t only financial assistance, but also some med schools, and Leicester used to be one, specifically recommended you apply for the bursary if eligible. But it’s not clear how they use it in the process. But I suspect it helps.

Leicester also preallocate a number of places to East Midlands applicants (defined) so worth knowing if you are local.

Hi I am using Medify - doing untimed questions first then timed .
Becoming familiar with all categories then starting to do mini mocks .
Also tutorial videos are helpful.

Hello all,

I am a gap-year student, who has got offers from Newcastle, BSMS, Plymouth. Now that I have done all the things related to the application process, I would like to know what resources would be useful to read or pre-learn before joining uni. Planning to firm Newcastle. Any current medical students giving their suggestions would be much more helpful.

Thanks

No need to pre-read, I personally just had a brief look through A-level notes a couple days before (I took a gap year) but the foundation for what you need to know is usually taught in those first couple weeks since everyone is coming from different backgrounds.

First couple months is definitely more for settling in and finding what revision technique works for you. Nevertheless, take a well-deserved break since settling in can be quite tough but take things one step at a time.
