Does anyone else feel completely unprepared for paper 2. I felt quite relaxed about paper 1 but I’m really stressed about paper 2, especially global systems and governance even though it’s the one I enjoy the most

Guys do you think it’s more likely that contrasting (distant) place study will come up for the 20 marker in changing places or local place study? Based on what has come up in the past?

That came up last year did it not?

Does anyone know what the global systems and governance essay question was in the 2023 paper?

It was something like this

what would you write for this?

have an intro just overviewing one of them, id chose the imf, dependant on the question talk about how they can be successful but have a few draw backs

p1 - successes
things like serbia investment in 2014 following 2008 financial crisis.
loan paid off in 2018 and economy stabalised

p2 - failures, primarilly how they lack a knowledge of how less developed coutries work as the boards are dominated by first world member countries
indonesia in 1990 talk about how failure to roll over loans led to the closure of 18 banks leading to immense economic rammifications

conclusion just summarising it all up
anyone got any predictions for 20 markers for global systems, contemporary urban and changing places????

i’ve made these practice questions, though it’s hard to predict what will actually come up as they could literally ask about anything

1. ‘Global institutions, such as the United Nations, play the greatest role in reinforcing unequal power relations as a consequence of globalisation.’ To what extent do you agree with this view?

2. ‘Quantitative sources are more useful than qualitative sources in representing the changing characteristics of place.’ With reference to a distant or local place you’ve studied, to what extent do you agree that this view applies for its changing demographic characteristics or its changing patterns of social inequality.

3. Assess the importance of management strategies used to tackle urban environmental issues in allowing sustainable cities to develop.

Have you made these predictions based on what’s come up in the past papers?

yeah, mostly based off last year as none of those topics came up, though after paper 1 when they repeated the tropical rainforest case study two years in a row it’s harder to make predictions

ultimately the examiner doesn’t know what ur local or distant place is so if the question is asking for one you use either. like brick lane is my distant place but if they ask a question on JUST local place i’ll probably use brick lane since i know it better.

Okay thanks! And yeah that’s true it’s hard to make predictions because you can’t be entirely sure it’s so annoying 😭😭
For everyone who does population and environment, do you think learning specifically about zonal soils ( the different horizons etc) is mandatory. I know the two specific types of soil are important but what about the other information ? Struggling to remember the information for it 😭

How would you answer the last CUE question? What would your counter be or just how would you argue around the importance of management strategies?

i’d probably talk about ways to manage issues surrounding urban air pollution, drainage, waste, water pollution etc. and how they’re successful are and giving examples, you could mention opportunities vs challenges with achieving urban sustainability e.g. how level of development, attitudes, rate of urbanisation etc. affect the ease of becoming more sustainable, also mentioning other aspects of sustainability that aren’t just environmental like social and economic sustainability
Praying that the aqa overlords pick alright questions that are easy to answer and not some weird obscure questions

yeah lmao i feel like idk anything about global systems and governance

yess this is kinda how I feel I felt way more confident with paper 1 but that's also bc id done way more solid and consistent revision whilst CUE, globalisation and changing places feels so all over the place! I wish we could just do another round of physical content 😅😭

I've found it sooo much easier to look at MDGs and look at the impacts and get some facts (so like child mortality decreased by 50%) and then say SDGs developed due to successes of that, and then for any analysis look at wars that are/have been going on and look at how they couldve prevented them
