Dropping out of university

I am currently a second year student at the University of Northampton, recently deferred due to medical reasons. After some time off I have decided that I want to drop out of my course and start an apprenticeship in another industry. I was wondering if anyone knew what I need to do to actually drop out? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I don't know what you need to do to drop out but all I would say is I think you are making the right choice and I admire your courage. University is practically a scam now and to be honest from my experience all my mates who have gone are kinda losers and those who went on to do apprenticeships and work straight out of school are making absolute bank and won't be paying off debts for the rest of their lives. I am not too sure what you study but if it is money you are after then I would have a look at aerospace industries like Leonardo or in the Finance Sector with UBS. These industries have diverse roles and are very reputable and respected (the military industrial complex may be questionable but either way) They are typically competitive but it is worth a shot. I am a military man myself and would also encourage you to check out military apprenticeships or direct Officer entry, there are a lot of jobs in the military that will give you experience in a wide range of areas all the way from engineering to medical stuff. And although a £30,000 starting salary for officers may not be too attractive all food and accommodation is so cheap it is basically free compared to the private sector nearly all that money is disposable income.

I don't have too much knowledge on apprenticeships outside of aerospace, finance and the military so I will attach some companies you can check out if they intrigue you, keep in mind these are quite competitive especially those in Finance but you should be able to get it if you work hard enough:

For finance you should also check out smaller firms, the big ones attract huge talent so may be more difficult to get in. However if you do hack it then your practically set for life.

Aerospace (more engineering and science orientated):

Lockheed Martin

Leonardo UK

Boeing

BAE systems

GKN Aerospace

Rolls-Royce

Finance (Numbers, people skills and long hours)

UBS

Bloomberg

Practically most banks and finance companies offer them so have a search.

Military:

RAF, Navy and Army, they all offer a different sort of thing so check it out if it intrigues you, it isn't for everyone though.

You will need to contact the Student Records department at uni to officially withdraw. You will also need to notify your student finance provider to stop future payments:

Hey @issy_grace!

Whilst I'm sorry that university hasn't worked out for you, it's great that you've found another industry you're interested in pursuing through an apprenticeship!

Your university should have a procedure in place for students who want to drop out, but I'd recommend talking to your personal tutor or course leader first as they'll be able to put you in contact with whatever university service/department necessary to take your case further.

Best of luck with your new apprenticeship,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
