Economics at Loughborough vs. University of Birmingham

I've received offers from both universities and need help choosing.
I like the course of both, but I've lived in Birmingham forever so I just don't feel like it'll be exciting or something new as I'll be living at home (plus I'm not particularly keen on the look of the uni and it's buildings - it's a tad dreary). However, it is higher on rankings and a Russel Group.
On the other hand, Loughborough is in a small town and I'm not keen on cities so I prefer that. Plus it'll allow me to move out which is just more of an adventure. But the university is super sports-focused so I don't know how much I'll enjoy it there (I only play sports for fun).

If i was you I would go to Loughborough. Even if you only play sports for fun they have amazing facilities for you to enjoy your hobbies to the max, and tbf living at home in my opinion takes away from the uni experience

Hi @ush06612 ,

Great to hear you are considering Loughborough 🙂

I have been at Loughborough for 2 years now so can give you a bit of insight about Loughborough in general. Loughborough is very much a student town and as you are on a campus it has such a strong community feel- I really love this as and you tend to see a lot of people you know. It's hard to describe but there are just nice vibes on campus and everyone is so nice. As you said Loughborough is a town rather then a big city- I like this as I thought I would have been overwhelmed living in a big busy city. I always feel it is nice as you get the best of both worlds- I love living in a quieter place but having the option to go to Nottingham and Leicester (only 20 minutes on the train) if I want more of a city scene.

The facilities at Loughborough are amazing- particularly for sport but also for academics and social aspects. During the week most social events happen on campus through the Student Union. For example, there tend to be 2 nights out in the week (Wednesday and Friday) and events during the day which differ week to week. Take a look at our student union website for more insight here. At the weekends more seems to happen off campus. In town (which is walking distance from campus) there are multiple pubs, bars, cafe's, restaurants and nightclubs which tend to be full of students at the weekend.

As you said coming to Loughborough may be more of an adventure as you will get more of that University experience from moving away from home. Another thing to keep in mind is Loughborough isn't very far from Birmingham and the train station is close to campus (we have a campus shuttle which goes straight to the train station).

Regarding sports at Loughborough- there are so many options! Obviously Loughborough is very well regarded for sports but there are other options to play sports for fun rather then competitively. We have something called IMS (hall sport) where you can represent your accommodation and play socially against other halls- I found this to be great fun and a great way to meet new people.

I hope this helps give some insight. If you have any questions please do ask 🙂

Alex
