Dental therapy and hygiene as a graduate

Hi guys,

I want to apply to graduate entry dentistry this year, but as a back up, I’m thinking of applying to dental therapy and hygiene.

Does anybody know the answer to any of these questions?:
- What is the best university for dental therapy and hygiene?
- Do any of the unis accept graduates?
- If so, do they look at your GCSEs and A-levels or only the grade achieved in your degree?
- Will they accept a dentistry personal statement?
- What are the fees and funding like for a graduate? (because ik for grad entry dentistry, the fees r different)

There are alot of Russell group universities that do dental hygiene and therapy I think what "the best university for the course" may be different for everyone. Try looking at the course structure and their teaching style and things like the student satisfaction for the course, you can find this information on UCAS and this link may help aswell:

Wishing you the best, hope this helped x

What is the teaching structure like there? How much is theory based and how much is practical? Do you do placements and have your own patients like they do in dentistry?

Your first year and second year is identical to those in BDS, so much so that you’re mixed into their cohort and have the same examinations. Second year differs a little bit in a sense that you actually have more to do than them in terms of an extra module. First year is very biomedical based, it’s from second year that you truly feel like a dental student.
Teaching structure is there’s multiple different types of classes. Lectures aren’t delivered in person and always accessed online, prerecorded.
Practically, in first year you have haptic sessions which are quite fun. Second year has a lot of phantom head sessions where you do treatments on teeth and practice techniques. You get examined on multiple practical things from handwashing and starting up a dental chair to treatments and it’s only until you pass these practical exams that you can do these treatments on your patients which leads me to answer your last question..
Yes of course you see your own patients like they do on dentistry! If anything you see patients much earlier than the dentistry students do and have a routine of seeing your patients with 3 days a week dedicated to this (mid year 2) where you have a partner and swap being a nurse and being a clinician with them.
These patients are specially for you, you book them in and see them routinely gradually moving along with treatments on them. You start off with only 2 patients for a couple months and then get 2 more for the remainder of the year (4 total).
Please note this course is extremely demanding, where you have a lottt to do in a week. I’m speaking as a second year student here, first year is quite chilled compared to second. There’s a lot to be on top of and you have a full 5 day week schedule.

Thank you this is so helpful and insightful! After the 3 years of the degree, do you become GDC registered straight away, so you can go straight into work?
