Hello ,

i’m currently in first year of biomedical sciences and would like to do postgraduate in Sonography aka medical ultrasound.

i have heard and seen that you need to then after the biomed ungrad do another degree in diganostic radiography and then get to do medical ultrasound. IS THIS TRUE!

is there any biomedical science people that ended up doing sonography ( medical ultrasound )

The traditional route for sonographers is to qualify as a radiographer, midwife, nurse, etc. and then, with work experience, secure a training place for sonography within a hospital trust and take a further qualification. It is extremely competitive to get one of the training places.

There are a few options for you:

- apply and transfer to a suitable healthcare course such as DR, therapeutic radiography, nursing, midwifery, etc. rather than completing your biomed degree
- complete your degree and then apply for a pre-reg masters for DR, which takes two years, then work as a DR and look for sonography openings
- research the Medical Ultrasound course offered by Leeds Uni - new this year

DR, TR, nursing and midwifery courses are exception courses so previous study is disregarded and you are eligible to receive undergraduate funding for both bachelors and pre-reg masters courses. At this point, it doesn't look like the Medical Ultrasound BSc at Leeds is an exception course so you might struggle to fund this with previous study. Also, this course is not eligible for the additional support available from the NHS Learning Support Fund.
