Does what uni you go to matter for maths?

im stuck on the fence between uni of bristol, uni of liverpool, uni of manchester, uni of leeds and loughborough for mathematics

based on stuff like "rankings" "employability" "prestige" "academics" and quality of the course itself bristol is better than all my other options on paper

however im rather reluctant to go so far away for uni (i live up north)

i dont know whether it's worth sticking it out and going down south to bristol for uni just because it's deemed "better" and more "valuable" than a degree from uni of liverpool or manchester which is literally a stone throw away for me.

would my opportunities and prospects be limited if i chose to go liverpool instead of bristol or manchester or any of the others mentioned? does what uni i end up attending "matter" for the course ive chosen?

out of these, the 'prestige' and 'reputation' of bristol and manchester are probably the best

but at the end of the day whichever one you choose will have little impact on your future opportunities

obviously university reputation can make a degree more valuable, but as long as you work hard wherever you go, you will be fine

Bristol and Manchester are on par, so go Manchester if you want to stay up north. It’s not going to make any difference to your job prospects. Bristol uni also has lack of accommodation and still sends some students to wales.

Hi @coolbeanoid1 ,

Great to hear you are considering Loughborough 🙂

All the universities you have mentioned are great options. It is a hard decision to make with lots of factors that come into it. When making my decision I had a few things I knew I wanted from my University which helped me make my choice. For example, I knew I wanted to be on a campus, I didn't want to be too far from home and I wanted the course to be right for me. These priorities are different for everyone. I would recommend looking at your own pros and cons of all your options and thinking about where you can imagine yourself living for 3 years- ultimately you want to be happy and not just stick it out.
I would recommend, if you haven't already, looking at the breakdown of the modules for the course across all your options. You can see this under 'What you'll study' here. This helped me see which course suited me best as they all have different variations.

I have been at Loughborough for 2 years now so can give you a bit of insight about Loughborough in general. Loughborough is very much a student town and as you are on a campus it has such a strong community feel- I really love this as and you tend to see a lot of people you know. It's hard to describe but there are just nice vibes on campus and everyone is so nice. The facilities at Loughborough are amazing- particularly for sport but also for academics and social aspects. During the week most social events happen on campus through the Student Union. For example, there tend to be 2 nights out in the week (Wednesday and Friday) and events during the day which differ week to week. Take a look at our student union website for more insight here. At the weekends more seems to happen off campus. In town (which is walking distance from campus) there are multiple pubs, bars, cafe's, restaurants and nightclubs which tend to be full of students at the weekend. You do need to keep in mind Loughborough is a town not a city so, if we fancy more of a city scene we go to Nottingham or Leicester as they are both only 20 minutes away on the train.

Loughborough would be closer to home for you so this may be a factor you can consider. The train station is close to the campus and we have a campus shuttle that takes you straight to the station.

I hope that helps give some insight. If you have any other questions please do ask 🙂

Alex

Bristol is abit better for Maths than Manchester but the difference is not huge at all so if you want to stay up north then take Manc. It is worth moving far out for uni if you are able to do so though, I'm from the north west and I'm very glad I moved away for uni. Personal choice though.
