Hi,

I’ve actually done Tally’s Blood last year for nat 5 english, I’m doing higher english this year. The 8 marker might ask you to explore the personality of Rosinella, Bridget, etc.. It could also ask you to explore the relationship between the characters, theme of prejudice etc.. Last year for my exam, I was asked to explore the theme of national identity (it almost threw me off 😨). Basically, it could ask you anything based on what you’ve learned about Tally’s Blood, you just need to know the text really well and practice every 8 markers questions on Tally’s Blood.

Hope you find it useful! 😀

Hi

I wrote a critical essay on a poem called “Hyena” by Edwin Morgan for my last year nat 5 exam. I might be able to help you because you’re also writing an essay about a poem:

1.

Use as much as evaluative words like:
An intelligent use of (technique)…
Engages the reader…
Vividly illustrates…

2.

Don’t EVER use “This shows” repeatedly as this could make the marker feel bored when they’re marking your essay. Instead, use indicates, from this we learn that…, emphasises, etc.. It’s better if you don’t use “This shows…” at all.

3.

Make sure you link back to the question at the end of each body paragraph to show that you have answered the question and you understood it.

4.

Give your essay to your teacher and ask them how you could improve your essay.

5.

During the exam, I started my essay first before the set text to make sure my essay is completed. It works well for me. (Optional)

Almost every year (except one year I think) there's a q relating to theme (or similar e.g. an emotion the theme makes you feel etc) so I'm definitely learning my theme essay plan well

Hi! Does anyone have a prediction as to what Carol Ann Duffy poem will come up this year?

I'm doing Bold Girls by Rona Munro for the set text, really stressed for that 8 marker. Not sure what I'm going to do if I forget my quotes for the question 😕

You don't need to have quotes memorized for the 8 marker. A short detailed summary of the event in the book is good enough

Really?! This will make it so easier as my teacher said I loose marks for not having quotes

Ideally, how long should I spend on each section? I fear that for the essay I may take longer...

I'm going to suggest it will either be about Italian immigrants, Nationality, work ethic or family

Hey! I'm doing Sherlock Holmes for my critical essay but I haven't even started writing it yet. I missed a lot of English so am a bit behind. I sent my teacher the original draft of the essay but she never got back to me. The exam is in less than 2 weeks and I'm stressing. For reference, I got 16 marks in my prelim. Please help!!!
