anyone got a clue on how to answer question 7b?

i watched some videos on youtube by "miss Adams teaches" she does alot on edexcel, but for 7b you just need to compare the similarities and differences in both texts, looking for things such as: tone, humour, slang/colliqual language, facts/statistics, metaphors, themes, ideas, purpose, audience, form, and if the text is biased. Basically just what's similar and different. write 3/4 daveloped paragraphsand spend about 14minuteson the question, section A is about a mark per minute.

Do you mean the one that asks you to compare the two texts? If so, I have something that may help. (Ignore the question number though) This is not my work but copied from something I found online 😊

Question 6
Example Question:
6) Compare the writers' ideas and perspectives about the lives of the rich. You should compare the writer's:

Main ideas Points of view

Presentation of these ideas and views

Use examples from both texts to support your comparison.
Top Tips:

You need to show your ability to COMPARE and ANALYSE the similarities/differences between ideas and perspectives
Question 6 will always focus on comparing Text 1 and Text 2
Use relevant subject terminology and discuss the impact of this on the reader and what the writer is trying to say
Always provide a quotation from Text 1 and Text 2, analysing the use of language or structure to present an idea in the text
Identify where the writer has used a certain tone, created tension/sympathy/mood or even provided an opinion You MUST use subject terminology, but focus on it's effect and how it is used to present an idea/perspective Think about your own reaction to certain phrases: how does it make you feel?
Sheps to success
1 Read the question carefully. Highlight the key information you need to find.
2 Scan Text 1 and Text 2. Decide on five main ideas, perspectives or opinions that are presented in a similar/different way in both texts.
3 Find quatations in Text 1 and Text 2 that support these similarities/differences, annotating the techniques that are used here.
4 Write a brief introduction that provides an overview about the BIG IDEAS that the writers use in their texts.
5. Write a valid point that directly answers the question, outlining the clear similarity/difference of ideas/perspectives/opinion between the texts.
6 Provide a quotation from Text 1 and embed it in a sentence, clearly identifying the techniques used.
7 Analyse how the writer presents this idea.
8 Explain the effect on the reader and the ideas/perspectives/opinion that is discussed.
9 Make a brief comment that identifies the similarity/difference with Text 2.
10 Repeat steps 6-9 in the same paragraph, before making a brief comment on the effect on reader in both texts.
11 Repeat this at least 3 times until you have four (or more) paragraphs.

How do I work out the ideas and points of view?

Identify where the tone changes, humour, exaggeration, hyperbole, emotive language

Consider how effective some of the phrases are

Why has the writer used certain words to grab the attention of the reader?

In fiction = descriptions, figurative techniques

In non-fiction = opinions, vocabulary, adjectives

Sentence Starters:
In both texts, the writers outline that...
In Text 1... whereas in Text 2...
While Text 1 shows... Text 2 shows...
The writers have contrasting views showing...
The writer purposefully includes the... to show that...
Question 6 - Example Paragraph
Example Paragraph: (x4 - or more - paragraphs needed)
In both texts, the writers outline that the lives of the rich are ones that are often fuelled by the suffering of their statt. In Text 1, the writer uses a simile to give the impression of the divers continually having to go back and forth to serve their employers. The verb "scampered" and the adjective "brisk" create a sense of speed, again showing the perspective of the staff which juxtaposes the luxury and relaxation of the owners. Similarly, the staff in Text 2 suffer from the "long days". The writer speaks about how they must work "from breakfast" until the last guest has gone to bed. This shows how long and hard the days are, emphasising the sacrifice that they crew have to make. In both texts, the writers show the viewpoint of the staff to emphasise the luxury of the employers.

Thank you so much!
if anyone needs help for the exam i use this structure which is very efficient and used it in my mocks to get a 9 for language

1-Always start with the texts as they are thematically linked to the transactional writing question so can help you with your transactional writing
2-Get your highlighter ready and read through text 1 highlighting any language and structure(do this before you answer any question as this will help you save thinking time by needing to go over the whole text again for question 3
3-answer questions 1 and 2
4-Question 3 is based on AO2 which is 'zooming in' on language and structure so you need to focus on this in your paragraphs. Ideally you want to have 3 or more paragraphs each with 3-5 quotes or structure points which you have 'zoomed in' on. If you really have no idea what to do your paragraphs on then you can do p1-descriptionsof people, p2-descriptions of events, p3-descriptions of setting or on main ideas.
5-Do the same for text 2 and question 4 and 5
6-This question is always the same and is marked based on AO4 which is evaluation, meaning you need to acknowledge the effect the text has on the reader(evokes emotions x and y, surprises, shocks, instils x and y in the reader, causes the reader to question, doubt, wonder). You need 3 or more paragraphs with 3-5 quotes each. After every quote use RRR-Reader, response, reason which is your evaluation part of the sentence. For example, the readerquestion why he narrator is frightened by x y z because...(insert reason).
7-Also make sure for Q6 that you use tentative language such as perhaps, maybe, may, could, is likely to, possibly ect and also use PECS (which stands for powerfully, effectively, clearly, successfully) when talking about how the narrator introduces idea x y z as they show you acknowledge the writer's intentions and his emphasis on certain things.
8-Q7(a) is a basic similarities question where you need to convey three different similarities-literally any similarity. Each point should be a 'paragraph' of it's own where you give a quote from both texts to support it and that's it-there is no need for explaining or anything.
9-Q7(b) is a 14 marker and assesses your ability to use both AO2 and AO4. You need 3 paragraphs or more with an intro and conclusion(if possible). The paragraphs should follow this structure: AO2 TEXT1 AO4 TEXT 1 then AO2 TEXT 2 AO4 TEXT 2 with TAP at the conclusion of the paragraphs( TAP mean a comparison of either text type, the audience or the purpose of the text). Do this for three paragraphs.
TIP-To save time you can simply use the AO2 AND AO4 you used in questions 3, 6 and 7(a).Hence why my teacher calls it a Frankenstein question.
10-Q8 or Q9-THE BIG BOYS-Here you need to pick a question based on which is more general and you know best to answer. Make sure to stick to the conventions of the text type such as a speech, article, review, guidebook. You also need good SPaG and also include some complex structure such as: colons, semi-colons, brackets, call backs and more.

I hope this helps someone jump a grade above and most importantly you NEED to just WRITE. This paper isdesighned to test your speed as well as your level of writing and analysis so dont spend any time staring into thin air.

Best of luck guys and i wish you the best.

sorry if you could explain what 'peel' is i would be able to help you better but for developing the points you need to demonstrate as much as possible your analytical skills such as being able to spot certain techniques and the reason behind why a writer specifically decided to use a certain word. Even if it sounds too formulaic and robotic, the best way to develop your points for Q3 is to constantly pick out quotes from across the WHOLE text and not just the beginning or middle or end. Many pupils lose marks for not referencing and displaying their understanding of the whole text.
(edited 7 months ago)
the question also says 'interests and engages the reader' so you have to always come back and relate to the question when you use evidence or quotes from the text.

PEEL stands for point, evidence, explanation, link
yes thanks for mentioning referring back to the question too.
also do you have any more tips for q6 which is the same as q4 in paper 1, i usually write a paragraph each on the idea of something in the extract, a perspective, an event and the tone

got Q6 i always start with perspective and the tone of the narrator as it helps me begin speaking about the text. The second paragraph is on an idea like what you said but the third is always on the events and setting. For events you can talk about the reason for the order of the events as it could be deliberate to raise tension or some other emotion. For perspective i describe whether it's 1st 2nd or 3rd andwhether the narrator is omniscient or limited and then i speak about how that influences me as a reader to either trust the account or information or to be sceptical of what im reading. For that paragraph you could also acknowledge the type of text such as whether it is a review, article, memoir, autobiography as that might suggest the text is heavily opinioated ad emotional so would affect me as a reader to evoke emotions x y z. You also could use adverbs when describing the narrators use of phases such as by using the phrase ''the narrator powerfully/clearly/successfully/effectively displays x y z by using .....''

there is also a leaflet, guidebook and website which are information texts so use the relatively same structure.websites need a name of a website such as www.wsghhfjkhjfohrf.com and the information text requires headings and a name of the book/leaflet

thx bro but its mostly school and thinking outside the box because unlike others im not as naturally gifted in english and writing subjects as i am in maths or sciences

also the best thing to do is to read the examiner reports which are attached to each english language exam series as they include good examples of texts and give an insight into how the answers are marked and what the examiners are looking for to give marks

how would you develop the point of the writer being omniscient and how that makes you develop certain emotions and trust it etc, sorry for asking too many questions too
