Newcastle Uni Computer Science NSS Ratings

I'm deciding between Nottingham and Newcastle for computer science BSc, and it seems like the ratings for Newcastle are pretty bad this year on the National Student Survey. On the other hand, most feedback I've heard anecdotally on the course is that it's good.

Any thoughts on why it could be so low? I love Newcastle and everything about it compared to Nottingham but this is the only thing that makes me nervous.

Hi Anonymous,

NSS scores are based on multiple factors and we constantly strive to address the issues raised and continue with the good practices identified.

We would encourage you to attend one of our upcoming Open Days to visit our School of Computing if you haven't already. You will be able to meet with some of the staff and students in the school, view the facilities, and have any questions you may have answered. This will give you an insight into the school and help you make a more informed decision. If you are an offer holder, please join us at our next Offer Holder Experience Day for Computer Science where we there will be demo lectures and practicals to give you a feel of what to expect when studying here.

Alternatively, you are welcome to contact the School of Computing with specific queries via: [email protected]

I am putting this here for future prospect students. I am a current student who is studying Computer Science at Newcastle University. The quality of teaching is highly incosistent, some lecturers like Jason Steggles are very very good, and quite a few of them are worryingly terrible like Fareed Arif and Abolfazl Lavaei. Take a look at them on rate my professor, highly intelligent people who are great researchers but terrible lecturers. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of their good lecturers have retired and they have been replaced with whoever is available. It's clear that the Uni doesn't actually care about the impact this is having on it's students, especially considering this is an issue they have known about for almost 2 years now.

I too am studying here. Glad to hear I'm not alone in my disappointment, the teaching makes learning unnecessarily tedious and difficult. I'd be very interested in hearing students from other universities experiences of their course -- I'm honestly considering transfers.
