Need friends starting at YSJ

Hey. Anyone new starting at YSJ 2024??
Hi Abii_w4

Congratulations on your offer and place at YSJ! 🎉

I’m currently in my 4th year at YSJ, doing my masters in Criminology, after graduating my Professional Policing undergraduate at YSJ last year. I would definitely recommend that you attend freshers fair in September, and sign up for a few taster sessions for some sports or/and societies.

I joined the Mountaineering club in my second year of uni (first year was 2020 lockdown), and found some of my closest friends whilst at uni through the club. I signed up for the taster session, as something to put me out of my comfort zone as I was (and still am) terrified of heights. So wasn’t expecting much from the session and thought I’d hate it. Turned out that I really enjoyed it, even though I thought I wouldn’t like climbing because of my fear. I’m now the Club Captain for Mountaineering, and it has honestly been one of my biggest highlights whilst at uni, as I’ve been able to try different experiences that I wouldn’t have thought of doing before, like climbing the 3 peaks, skydiving and all sorts of different climbing styles. So I would definitely recommend signing up for taster sessions at clubs or society’s that do activities that you’ve never done before or you’re unsure you would like!

Becoming a student ambassador is also a great way to meet new people, on other courses and years. It’s super flexible and pays pretty well for a part time job. Uni normally starts hiring at the beginning of the academic year (September/October time). It’s a great part time job if your course also has placements as well, as you can work when you want and also take a break while on placement. A lot of primary education, physiotherapy and OT students are student ambassadors, as it’s a very manageable part job to work around placements.

There is an official York St John freshers page on Facebook, which is really useful to find your flatmates or others on your course. Sports and Societies will often post in there as well about taster sessions, so if you don’t attend freshers fair it’s a good way for finding information about what’s happening on freshers week. This is the link in the page (null) https://www.facebook.com/share/KxHyXDg8RinWKx6u/?mibextid=K35XfP

Congratulations again on your place at YSJ! What are you going to be studying?

Hi there!

Congratulations on your offer! We look forward to meeting you in September 🙂 I currently study primary education but I believe that some of the academics I have teach on the Education, SEN and Mental Health course and they are all so approachable and supportive. Good luck with anything you may have prior to September and if you have any question I would be happy to answer them.

Hi! I’m starting in sept on the Primary Ed course 🙂
I was also wondering if anyone knows anything about the snow sports society for 24/25 ? I know YSJ students who say it’s widely numbers based on it being run- just thought I would ask. Many thanks

Hi there!

Amazing news! I really hope you enjoy studying Primary Ed as much as I have 🙂 With regard to the snow sports society, for it to be run next year students would be beginning to advocate for this by running for committee member roles before the next year. If it is not running next year though, you would only need 5 people to start a society of your own so if you found people as passionate as you about it, you could ensure there is a snow sports society by speaking to the student union!

Good luck with everything!
