Don’t worry. It is a civil offence, not a criminal offence, so if they do follow up, you will get a fine - not a criminal record. Even if you are unable to pay the whole fine straight away, THE BEST THING to do is to contact them and set up a payment plan (even if it’s Β£5 a week). Don’t ignore it, and it won’t become a big deal - because it really isn’t. They use scary language like β€œcourt summons” but it’s ok

Err, no. This is a criminal matter, and if OP is prosecuted and pleads guilty (or is found guilty) then they will have a criminal record.

It may be possible to persuade TfL to allow an out-of-court settlement but -- from what I've read elsewhere -- TfL do routinely prosecute things like this.

TfL's "Revenue Enforcement and Prosecutions Policy" can be found at https://content.tfl.gov.uk/revenue-enforcement-and-prosecution-policy.pdf
