Tuition Fee Loan rejected for second degree - but it's an AHP course?

Hi there,
I applied for the BMedSci in Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Sheffield and have received an email today that says:
We’ve worked out your funding and you won’t be able to get a Tuition Fee Loan in academic year 2024/25. This is because you've studied before, and you usually only get funding for your first degree course.
You can still get a Maintenance Loan for every year of your course...'

My first undergraduate degree was in Psychology, it's been a six year distance learning course with The Open University and I've had a TFL but not a maintenance loan. My understanding was that the SLT degree was exempt from the rules about not being covered for full funding and I'm extremely confused by this email. Is it likely that this is a mistake, and that I will be entitled to the Tuition Fee loan as well as the Maintenance loan? Or have I misunderstood the guidance (I've also asked on here and someone from SFE confirmed I would be eligible for both). Not really sure what my next steps should be.
Thank you!

Hi there. This course is and exception course and should attract Tuition Fee funding as well. There may have been a mistake when assessing the application. I would advise you to contact us directly regarding this. You can contact us on 0300 100 0607 for further assistance. Our opening hours are stated on our ‘contact us’ page. Alternatively, to access our live chat service select 'undergraduate' from your account and then ‘contact us’. From here you will be able to use our live chat service when it is available. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,
I've just contacted yourselves regarding this and have been informed that Speech and Language Therapy doesn't fall under the exception courses - the advisor then said that 'agriculture, psychology, sports science, dentistry etc' fell under exemption courses. However, I was under the impression that these were not exemption courses, and that AHP degrees were. I tried to explain that I'd been advised by several SFE representatives that I had been informed my course would be fully funded however she expressed that her system said that the SLT course was not classed as an exemption course. Feeling quite frustrated and confused as I was sure it was classed under the exemption course rule? Does anyone have any links to the guidance that I can check, and any idea what I should do now please?
Thank you!

AHP courses come under 'Subjects allied to medicine' for full-time study. Keep pursuing this despite your frustration.

Sorry - just to add to this.
I've been told I've been accepted for a maintenance loan (although can't see how much this is for and the advisor wasn't able to tell me), but she reiterated that I would not be eligible for the tuition fee loan as well as this.

Thank you for your help and the link, I'll definitely cite this - she said that 'Subjects allied to medicine' counted but when I said that Speech and Language therapy is classed as one of those, she disagreed and said that it wasn't on the list of courses! Can I just confirm what the following means please:
'To qualify for allied health profession (AHP) disregard the course must fit the definition of 'subjects allied to medicine'. Any courses listed under the 'subjects allied to medicine' definition are considered for the previous study disregard introduced under the AY 2017/18 NHS changes. Any students who already hold an equivalent or higher qualification will not be entitled to further support.'

Will I definitely still be eligible for Tuition Fee loan as well as the maintenance loan, with this being my second degree?
Thank you! I think I'm going to try and call again shortly and speak to someone else if possible.

On the link I gave, it says:

According to the student support regulations, an AHP subject means:

chiropody
dental profession subjects
dietetics
dietetics and nutrition
occupational therapy
orthotics
orthotics and prosthetics
physiotherapy
podiatry
radiography
radiotherapy
speech and language therapy

You should be eligible for both tuition fee and maintenance loans if you are not already registered in the field.

@Graeme SFE could you have a look at this issue please?

Ah, sorry to add again! I think what I just quoted above was referring to part-time study, rather than full-time courses (which the one I'm applying for is) - so would imagine that it would be the case that I can get TFL and maintenance?

Thank you so much! I've just called back (I was going to leave it a little while but just wanted to see if I could sort) and the chap I spoke to was really helpful, said it definitely falls under exception course and he's going to escalate my case for a re-review. I should hear back within five working days, so fingers crossed! Thank you all so much for your help

Great news but frustrating that you have had to go through this. I just wonder how many potential students may have given up on their courses if they received a similar notification in error. :s-smilie:

What happened with this? Did you get the funding you needed?
