Nursing placement/timetable university of chester

I have been offered a place to do nursing at the University of Chester (Birkenhead campus) and I was just wondering how placements work here? I read you don't get to choose, so when will you find out where you will be? How long do they last?

Also, what is the timetable like? Is it 5 days a week? I have a part time job so I was wondering if I would be able to keep it or if I'd have to give it up?
Thankyou:smile:

Email the department and ask them for a copy of the timetable.

Hi @Kj7769

Congratulations on your offer to study at University Centre Birkenhead with us! 🙂

Our student nurses complete 20 weeks of practice placements in each year of the programme, in the first year you will complete 3x 4 week placements and 1x 8 week placement. The placement dates for September 2024 cohort are:

6th Jan (4 weeks)

3rd Feb (4 weeks)

3rd March (4 weeks)

26th May (8 weeks)

You will receive specific placement details, such as where your placement is located, usually 6 weeks before the placement is due to start. The Practice Learning and Support Office (PLSO) allocate placements and ensure that all students undertake sufficient diversity of placements to meet NMC requirements. PLSO also consider issues such as travel time, previous experience and ability to drive, etc, when allocating placements.

A lot of our students have part-time jobs alongside their studies, during placement it is helpful if you have a part-time role that offers you some flexibility and lots of nursing students work shifts in healthcare settings as these are easier to fit around placements.

If you have any other queries, our Health and Social Care faculty staff members would be pleased to chat with you! You can reach out to them via email - [email protected].

You might also be interested in chatting with some of our current students online via Unibuddy. Faye, is currently in her first year studying Nursing at UCB and I'm sure she would be happy to chat about her experience on the course so far and how she has found her placements. You can find her profile by filtering 'Campus' to show University Centre Birkenhead students here - https://www.chester.ac.uk/study/chat-to-student/

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Becky

UoC rep Becky has given a great response in the previous reply. Just to add to this - as a practice assessor, I see a lot of Chester students. Working in Chester, the students I see are predominantly based in Chester itself; the Birkenhead students tend to get placements on the Wirral and Warrington students tend to get placed in Warrington (although some of the Chester based students I've worked with have had placements at Arrowe Park hospital or RJAH ortho hospital in Gobowen)
