UCAS Extra and course on hold

I applied to a university but I accidentally substituted it for a different choice in the 14 day period, however they still gave me an interview and then an offer through their welcome website, I told them I’d like to accept it however they said I can’t accept it through them it has to be through ucas extra so I have now declined all my choices for them and now they’ve told me the course is on hold and there’s a possibility I won’t have a place after all unless there’s space, I’d like to attend this university and they’re now the only choice I have so what’s the best steps to take from here? Any advice appreciated thanks.

If you mean you have been made an offer for a course that technically you no longer have an application choice for, then you need to phone UCAS for advice - 0371 468 0 470.

They told me all I can do is add that choice as an extra which I have done and is what the uni told me to do but then the university came back and said the course is on hold my application is not live and I may not be given a place.

Make sure that the Uni can actually see your Extra application - it usually takes 24 hours for an application to go from UCAS to the University. And find out what they mean by 'the course is on hold' - do they mean the course itself may be cancelled?

The course is still on but it was like they was saying they can’t give out any more offers or places for example but I was told through their welcome website a few days ago they’re giving me an offer so I don’t get why they can’t rectify it.

Have you actually applied through Extra or not?

Yes I have and notified the admissions, they then said my application isn’t live as it’s not on ucas and the course isn’t taking places and it’s on hold, even though they gave me an offer through their website it didn’t show through ucas obviously as this choice was substituted, I’m now left with them as my only choice obviously as it’s extra, basically the question is do you reckon a place would come available and id be given an offer as people usually apply for multiple choices.

Have you sent them a screengrab of the website info that made you think that you had an offer?

This is all a bit odd, especially as they interviewed you. I can only think that you swapped out a choice after Jan 31st.

That’s a good idea I will send that to them, and yeah I thought it’s still possible without ucas as my mother has applied directly to a university before, but apparently not. I still hope I can accept their offer I thought they made to me as it would be my only choice now.

i don’t understand why they can’t now just give me the offer through the ucas extra so I can accept it that way as they sent me the offer in their website only a few days ago, but they’re saying now only if spaces come available as if they didn’t already get my hopes up and send me an offer.

This makes a bit more sense if you applied directly outside of UCAS. But yes, they should not have told you to use Extra to formally submit an application if the course was now closed.

Send them any evidence you have, maybe an interview booking and whatnot.

Worst case, UCAS might be willing to reset your original offers as the uni have messed you around.

Now today the university declined the extra option on ucas because they said it’s a duplicate application, there’s no communication unless I phone them and they say the same thing every time you have it out is as the extra choice and ask ucas etc if not go through clearing.

I would be inclined to tell UCAS what has happens and see if they will reinstate your original offers.

I would also make a formal complaint to the uni laying out what they’ve told you at various stages.

I don’t understand why I cant just accept the offer through the uni directly, there’s a whole section outlining my offer and the details of it and a link saying click here to reply, it then says because I applied through UCAS I have to accept it through them, but there’s now nothing there on my ucas. Even after I tried to add them as an extra. I’m communicating with them and they’re so slow to reply and I’m met with attitude when calling and being told to wait but it’s okay because I may not have a place this year and will have to wait another year.

All undergrad offers have to be processed via UCAS at some point, even direct applications. The uni can't get away from that. Again, I suspect the course was closed when you did the swap and has never been open to Extra apps, but why they continued with the interview process I have no idea.

Given the faff they've caused you, I'm not sure why you want to persist in getting in. All you can do is await their response if you don't want to take the actions I suggested in post #13.
