What happens if you quit a job without giving a notice?

I've been working at Nando's for just over 3 weeks now, but when I applied they were very desperate for staff so despite telling them that I can't do lots of hours as I have university to worry about, I'm doing 7 hour shifts three evenings a week and have closed the restaurant every single time, which adds on another 3 hours (which I don't believe I've been paid for either).

This means I leave around 12:15am on a good day and 1:30am on a busy day, which I simply can't do.

Those are my biggest problems but generally I dislike the job, the coworkers are fine but the manager has extremely high expectations and berates me for any mistakes I make.

So i was wondering whether I need to hand in a notice, and if so how many weeks I should give. But what would happen if I don't and simply just email them and stop turning up to shifts

Well they can't force you to come into work so if you stop turning up they will just fire you. if your not worried about them giving you a bad reference for your next job or anything like that then go ahead, but it would be polite to hand in a 2 weeks notice so they can at least get someone to replace you in time. I've had coworkers just never show up again before and it sucks because there job is handed off to the rest of us.

Thanks, does that mean that if I don't put this job in my cv when job hunting for another one then I won't have to deal with a bad reference? Or will another future employee call them anyway to get a reference?

I just left my job today for the exact same reason. If you've been working under a month you shouldn't have to give notice i believe.

if you dont put them as a reference then no they won't be able to call them. I've heard of some places that warn other bussines about people who just don't show up, but I doubt nandos does that since its a chain and loads of people probably do the same thing

Check your contract to see how much notice it says to give. As you have only been there for 3 weeks, i cant imagine having to give much in the way of notice. Maybe a week?
Although you feel like not giving in any notice, id at least give them notice. Like someone else said, it puts extra pressures on your co workers if you just stop showing up. At least if you give notice they can sort shifts out so they wont be a person down.
Theres also the reference side- if you will need a reference for your next job, then you can kiss goodbye to a good reference from them if you havent given notice.

Did they not give you any paperwork when/before you started?
It may be worth asking your co workers. Or if you dont feel up to asking them, id just give a week.
