How to boost my application

Hello!

I'm a year 12 student currently studying LIBF finance, IB business and IB psychology. I was a student that didn't know what career path I wanted to choose, so out of comfort and experience I chose these 3 subjects and when I come to think of it, I feel like finance and business are disadvantaged subjects.

I have started looking around and I'm interested in solicitor apprenticeship programmes. I'm interested in talking face to face with clients and speaking for my clients. I'm an outgoing and enthusiastic individual, I enjoy teamworking and communicating with individuals.

My main problem is my subjects, If I was to go back and choose my subjects again I would have chosen English or history or both, i enjoyed English at gcse, I don't know why I didn't do it for IB. How do I boost my application and make myself look good, I would like to be accepted into solicitor apprenticeships as it looks interesting to me but I want to prove people that I'm chosen for this role. I attended a local democracy week event, we were given microphones to talk into and voice our opinions and I built up the courage to voice my own opinion and I absolutely loved that experience.

Once again, how do I make myself look 'good' and also, am I at a disadvantage for choosing these subjects, will I get anywhere when applying for a solicitor programme? Many aspiring solicitor students I see on LinkedIn either study History or English.

Thank you .

Hi! I’m not too sure how to boost your application as I am in year 12 too and would love to hear from year 13’s or degree apprentices who have gone through the application process. However, your subject choice is completely fine, you definitely don’t need English or history as long as you secure the grades needed. Hope that helps!

I feel a little relaxed now, thank you.
What subjects do you do and what degree apprenticeships are you interested in )?
You should have a look at LinkedIn, there's loads of people on there talking about their experience and what they do.

Sounds good, I totally understand what you’re saying. In my opinion though, from applying to a lot of different places for apprenticeship (and I mean like I’ve applied for soliciting and finance and software) they are looking for people who are really interested in the apprenticeship and can see that you’ve put in the work. I’m sure you’d both agree. They don’t necessarily look into the subjects you’re studying in a levels compared to the experience you have under your belt. Of course aim high when completing your a levels but I suggest you both find work experience and get as much exposure to any sector (preferably law) and keep your CV updated.

Your in year 12 so you will have so many opportunities available to you, try applying for SEO London or Bright Network. I know it sounds and will feel daunting when you have to attend these events but trust me it will pay off when you get into your apprenticeship. These are the things that will make you stand out as it shows your commitment and dedication.

If you guys got more questions feel free.

Thank you so so much, good luck during your application process, I wish you the best:smile:

I've been doing many Watson-glaser tasks (these are the online assessments that aspiring law solicitors will do when their application is accepted)

I've been doing many practices, but I've been getting 40% !!! I feel absolutely embarrassed and feel ashamed, I don't know why I'm not getting 80%, I'm not sure if you know about the Watson-glaser task but if you do, can you help me improve on it? I don't know if I'm stupid or silly, I can't seem to get a great percentage on it and I feel stupid.

I know I sound really harsh with myself, apologies.

Also, what subjects do you study at sixth form?

If I were you, I’d go on ChatGpt and ask it to provide me a Watson-glaser task to answer then as I answer to provide me feedback on how to improve. That’s really the only way except from practicing which you’re already doing.

A levels I’m taking Psychology, sociology and history. Thank you so much! Wish you the best too

I can't thank you enough, have you tried the Watson task?

No problem! I haven’t tried it actually! I only applied to a handful of soliciting apprenticeships and haven’t heard back yet 😭
