Stuck in a rut in life.

I did my A Levels in 2019 and I decided not to go to university and get a job. I had a brief job in autumn 2019 then left.

However since early 2020 I have been working in the same job because it was comfortable and the money wasn’t too bad for what it is.

Over the last year I have felt completely bored and I don’t want to be stuck there for the next 40-50 years and I feel I want to work somewhere more engaging and to do with my interests.

How do you get into a proper career if you haven’t been to university? At school you have career advisors but now I have no one to help me get into something else. I’ve looked online for apprenticeships or work experience and there’s virtually no opportunities out there, especially at this time of year.

I feel my life 20 years from now will be exactly the same as now and there’s nothing I can do about it.

How do you get on in life after sixth form of you don’t go to university? Maybe it was a mistake not to go.

I can offer some limited advice, I'm currently finishing my a levels and possibly going off to do an apprentice, I have a part time job currently, but if you're thinking about getting a job of a higher level there's couple ways to go about it. If I were in your position I would begin looking at what you already have and the kind of jobs you're able to apply for with your current qualifications, if non of them take your fancy you could look at going through the higher education route, don't be put off by you're age if you want to go uni you still can (there's no age limit), alternatively going down the apprentice route, start by looking into companies within the field you wish to work for, then look if they offer an apprenticeship scheme, if so look at all the factors, pay, what you get out of it i.e. the qualifications you gain and whether they tend to higher their apprentices after completing the course. I found the best way to go around it is to work backwards choose what your dream job is find out what level of education is needed and then find out how to achieve them, most importantly is to stay motivated if you want it ban enough you'll get it, and make sure you choose carefully, go with what you enjoy money should be a second thought not your primary goal.

Hi there 🙂 I'd recommend taking a look at this thread https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7459254, you can ask more questions about Higher and Degree Apprenticeships as a potential option. What I will say is, you can never predict where your life will be in a year, two or 5... it might seem like this is the end of the road and you're out of options but there really is a lot of opportunity out there! Don't give up your search!
