Should Sports Look So Professional?

This may seem like a silly question and post, but I get the feeling that sports should be entertaining beyond it being sterile professional competitions. The formality of sports is so cut and dry and they've got to be taken so seriously that the fun isn't really there.

I think it'd be awesome if athletes dressed up in silly clothes to perform in their sports if it's safe to do so. If people dressed in cosplay outfits or they dressed up in fancy dress sporting events would be far more enjoyable to watch. For instance, what about a hurdle race in fruit costumes, a game of darts in Viking outfits or football in space gear and a helmet?
