I can’t find any medical work experience

I applied at least 10 dif places all of them said they were full or can’t take any applications due to winter pressures.I had emailed some places a while ago but they never got back to me so I re-applied now just for them to tell me they’re full. The other places I have found are far away and prioritises local students / schools.I am looking for shadowing more specifically. What should I do?

i assume this is a hospital/gp.

many medical schools don't require you enter a set hospital or gp, they like care based work. try applying to care homes

As above - any 'care' experience or any NHS experience.
Phone care-homes, special schools, podiatrists, physios, and anyone else you can think of.

Would an opticians work or is that more for people applying for that at Uni instead of med?

Opticians would work just fine. It is not about what you do so much as what you learn from it. Optician, Pharmacy, soup kitchen, care home, RNIB, even a public-facing part time job teaches you about teamwork, communication, empathy, responsibility, etc etc

Also people forget on a hospital ‘jobs section’ they often have a volunteering section, so it’s worth checking that out for your local hospitals

Hi there,

For medicine in particular it can be really difficult to find work experience! I totally understand the struggle to find experience in Year 12 and Year 13 as some places will also not take you because you are under 18.
For Sunderland in particular, I know that they actually don't accept shadowing as work experience because you usually don't actually do anything. Therefore they feel it is more valuable to do something long term which is public facing so you get some experience of being with the public.

I hope this helps,
