A-Level Further Maths Options

Been on here for a while but haven’t really posted at all…

People who do Further Maths (Y12/13), what is your favourite one of the optional modules for Edexcel? and what do you enjoy about them? Just want to know what we’ll be getting ourselves into.

We do all of Further Maths in Y13 so we’ll be voting for what options we’ll be doing in a few weeks (between FP1, FM1 and FS1). And I’ll prob drop A-Level Statistics if FS1 gets chosen.

I'm in year 12. We've done all of FP1 and I've done a decent amount of FP2 and FM1. Those would definitely be my favourites. I really like mechanics because it is pretty intuitive and 'rewarding' when I'm able to do the questions. I hate statistics. The core pure modules are also pretty nice. The calculus is definitely my favourite parts of them, although it may be more FP2.

I’m leaning away from FM1 as I HATE mechanics (but i do agree it’s really rewarding when you get it all right!) and I don’t take physics. I love pure and stats pretty much equally so I wouldn’t mind whichever one gets picked too much, will mean if we do FS1 that I’ll go down to 3 A-Levels instead of 4 though.

We’re definitely doing D1 so the vote between those 3 will only be for picking one. My college also only lets us do module 1s (does that matter a lot?) so we won’t have any chance of doing FP/FS/FM/D2.

My favourite topics so far are pretty much everything from stats, calculus, numerical methods and exponentials and logs.

Firstly, I commend you and am wary of you for enjoying statistics. Not everybody's cup of tea, definitely not mine.

I'm not sure how common only doing the first year modules are. So our school has the full 2-year a level as an option to people. But for people who don't take the full a-level can complete a one year course with FM1 and FS1 only. For the full a level people its all of FP and FM. I assume your college runs it similar to the one-year course that we do.

I shouldn't think it matters though. It depends what you're thinking of beyond college. Even for the mega STEM courses you don't need further maths at all. So even if you're doing one year of it, it is still beneficial.

We’re still doing the full A-Level. We do all of A-Level Maths in Y12 and all of A-Level Further Maths in Y13. Even for the full A-Level you only NEED to do 2 of the Module 1s (eg. FP1 and FS1) or a matching Module 1 and Module 2 pair (eg. D1 and D2).

I’ll be applying for a Maths & Stats degree to a few top unis (most of which require Further Maths A-Level) and also to Cambridge for just Maths.

Good luck though 🙏🙏🙏 wish I could really enjoy mechanics as much as you do, mechanics in regular A-Level Maths isn’t that bad after some practice tbh.

I think I understand now. It was slightly unclear to me because my school runs it slightly different. Good Luck!
