GYG: Journey to Cambridge Maths 🚀

Hellloooooooo!! I’m George, not new here but I haven’t been posting for very long at all. I decided to create this blog to help me track my progress and help others who might be looking at applying for a Maths degree.

A bit of background…… I’m in Year 12 and I’m taking 4 A-Levels: Maths, Further Maths, Computer Science and Statistics along with an EPQ which I handed in a couple of weeks ago. I’m planning on applying to Cambridge for Maths (yes i know STEP exists 😨😨) and to a handful of other unis for Maths & Statistics. I’m already thinking of dropping Stats A-Level especially if we end up doing the Stats section of Further Maths then there isn’t much reason to have it.

About me… I love gaming, especially retro Nintendo games and Pokemon, I also love the F1 and Man United (gets hard to at times), and I love Japan too, might go and live there later on who knows?

These are my predicted grades:
Edexcel Maths - A*
Edexcel Further Maths - A*
Edexcel Stats - none (official) yet (joined late)
OCR Computer Science - A*
AQA EPQ - A*

Do hit me up for any tips too on A-Level Maths (not FM we haven’t started it yet), Computer Science, Statistics, GCSE Maths, L2 Further Maths, I’d be happy to help!

And I hope you’ll like reading this little blog just as much as I’ll like writing it

Thanksssssss 💙 you’ll love A-Level Maths especially if you’re getting 8s and 9s too. I got a 9 in Maths and I find A-Level pretty easy, getting 90%+ in most tests. Personally my favourite parts of maths are all of calculus and all of stats. If you commit really well to it you’ll find stats easy, I loveeeeeeee it.

Computer Science can get really hard with the project, I’d recommend taking Physics, Stats or even Econ instead of it and it won’t really limit where you can go. Many people apply to and get into top unis for a CS degree with Maths, Further Maths and Physics for example.

Good luck with GCSEs though and prepare for really high grade boundaries, they caught me out in a lot of subjects last year.

of courseeee 🤍🤍
yess i'm currently getting 8/9s in maths, and it's one of my fav subjects, although recently i've been in sort of a maths slump and hated going to maths lessons, but i think now i've started liking it again so hopefully i get back into my passion for it <33
yeah i was thinking of taking computer science at first, but thought it would be really difficult considering i'm also taking further maths and maths !! and i'm looking to do computer science at a top uni haha, so i'm taking maths, further maths, physics and bio

thank youuu and yes omds grade boundaries are the worst, but just means i need to put in a lot more effort to get those top grades 💪

Maths, FM, Physics and Bio is a very strong combo for almost any kind of STEM degree, definitely for Computer Science you wouldn’t have a problem getting into unis with that combo.

If 4 A-Levels gets too much at any point and you have to drop 1, definitely drop Bio, unis will NOT respect Bio for a CS degree like they do with FM or Physics, but as a 4th it’ll look really good. It could be why I end up dropping Stats because it’s not very respected and the content overlap is massive anyway.

Feel free to tag me in other GYG threads (especially ones with a maths focus!!) and I’d be more than happy to help out.

my only concern is that i may find further maths difficult since its apparently a lott of workload and really intense, and it may end up in me dropping it. ofc i'm gna try hard but like if i drop fm then i'll only have 3 a levels, without an epq either since i can't do an epq with 4 a levels at my school.
but your point on dropping bio makes sense, so if i ever get round to struggling with the workload, then i may consider dropping bio

yesss i'll defo tag you in other gygs <33

Hiyaa and welcome to gyg 🙂
Im also a year 12 student but Im taking bio, chem and psych so completely different subjects lmaoo. Im also taking a epq so do give out tips if you have any 🥳

Your predicted grades are AMAZINGGG so well done on thatt.

I had a nintendo 3ds growing up lol. I had that monkey run game on it, the one where you can race, fight or be in that pink ball (i forgot what its called lmaoo), WWE game and street fighter I think. They were all my big brothers to be fair, but I just used to rob them and play on them becuse what else is a little sister for. AND NOO MAN U NEVERRR, LIVERPOOL FOR THE WIN. Dont ask me ought about it tho becuase I know crap all. Its not like Ive been following them my whole life or anything (I have but its bc of my big brother again and it stuck so im a liverpool supporter till death do us part). Im acc getting onto F1 as well since year 11, but once again dont ask me anything about it because I suck at the rules and everything related to it, I just like watching fast cars win 😭.

Japan would be a nice place to go with all the cherry blossoms. I love cherry blossoms. Ofc everything else in Japan is amazing too. Ive been tryna learn it, through anime and real life ofc, but its so hard😭. Like the anime one I kinda get, but writing it and reading it are going to have my head.

SOrry this was so long and just me yapping, but moral of the story Imma be following along with your journey lol. Here is my gyg if you are interested Tatakae L's GYG Journey - The Student Room

I think if you like maths and do well in it then fm isn't that much workload, you just need to be consistent with notes and revision and then you should be fine. Sadly my teachers for pure did 70% on each main topic and is now coming back to it but that's just confused us all because everything is in a weird order. I'm sure though if I had put more effort at the start of the year to really revise then it would be easier - so when you take it please be organised!

Also just like @Tatakae L your tag didn't show up in my notifications? But thanks

Heyy welcome!! I'm Scarlett and I'm also in year 12, and I'm studying similar things to you! I'm doing Edexcel Maths, Edexcel Further Maths, OCR Computer Science and AQA EPQ. The only thing that is different is that I'm doing Edexcel Economics. What are you doing your EPQ on?

Your predicted grades are amazing by the way!!

Looking forward to reading your future blog posts!

Thanks!

I did my EPQ on Pokémon GO and how it impacts physical and social activity. When going through it I ticked all the boxes for an A* so hopefully the staff can come through with that.

I really wish I did Econ instead of Computing, the NEA is an absolute nightmare even though the theory is really easy. Can’t change the past though.

Omds no way, thats such an interesting idea to do it on. Im currently doing mine on euthanasia plans 😭. I was going to do it on attack on titan but there isnt half as many resourses online as I would like for that and theyre all like reddit posts the ones that there are so I cant do much about it.

Ooh that's really interesting!

We haven't started the NEA yet but I'm not looking forward to it..also my CS teachers are really bad at teaching which isn't helpful but at least the content is relatively easy to teach myself. Econ is definitely my favourite subject though!

Depends are you in college studying it now? or are you in Y11 looking to take it?

If you’re in college now then just keep on top of the workload and make sure you have clear concise notes for EVERY single topic. I made myself a OneNote file to store all of these and it helps me a lot. Do not and I mean DO NOT procrastinate with this subject (especially with the NEA) like you might do with others, it doesn’t wash with this at all and it shows in your work.

If you’re in Y11 right now looking to take it, DON’T TAKE IT, no university requires it and you would be much better off doing Physics and/or Further Maths. As long as you have some programming experience, Computer Science A-Level will not give you any advantage when going for a CS degree.

thank you! I'm in year 12 right now and am planning to do a degree apprenticeship for tech. thank you for the advice, I was planning to focus more on my new during the summer and I relay do need to get started on making condensed notes.

can I ask what resources you used to make your notes?
