Hi,

just getting to grips with the main concepts of this chapter, elastic strings and springs:

In an 8 sided tug of ware the front men in each team are 10m apart, and the men behind them are spaced out at intervals of 2m each. The rope has modulas elasticity of 50000N. On the command 'take the strain' each competitor pulls on the rope with a force of 120N. How much does the rope stretch:

1) between the two front men

2) between the two anchor men

I know this is an easy question for the topic, i just need to get the concept together.

Many thanks

1) between the two front men
2) between the two anchor men
1.) Between the 2 front men, there is 10m of rope ---> l (Rope) = 10m.
T (10m Section Of Rope) = 120 + 120 = 240N
T = (Lambda.x)/l
---> 240 = (50000x)/10
---> x = 2400/50000
---> x = 0.048m
---> Rope Stretches 4.80 cm

2.) Between the 2 anchor men, there is 2m of rope ---> l (Rope) = 2m.
T (2m Section Of Rope) = 120 + 120 = 240N
T = (Lambda.x)/l
---> 240 = (50000x)/2
---> x = 480/50000
---> x = 9.6 * 10^-3 m
---> Rope Stretches 0.96 cm
