Corpus Christi

Hello,
My daughter got into Corpus Christi for PPE program. We are based out of California. I was wondering if we have students who will be starting at Oxford from US.

Thank you.

I am not from the US, but no doubt some of your fellow Americans will be along in a bit. I congratulate your daughter. Corpus is a lovely college and PPE is an interesting degree. I hope that your daughter thrives academically, and has a wonderful time socially.

I studied Modern History at Wadham many years ago, and had a great time. My daughter starts at St Peter's in October, reading Jurisprudence. Perhaps our daughters will meet one another.

PS: If you have not already done so, maybe have a look at the Oxford Parents' Association thread - it contains much useful information about the Oxford experience.

Hello! Thank you for responding. We are very excited for her to start this new phase in her life. It’s tough decision to not choose a US university which is more familiar and closer to home. But the more we read about Oxford the more we are convinced with our decision. Between my husband and I we have attended Indian and US colleges and hence do not have any experience with UK education system. We are figuring out as we go along.

I did start following the parents thread today and will spend some time reading through it. Very relieved and excited to see the support available for parents.

Thank you.

I recently graduated from Corpus, I wasn't an international student so can't speak to that experience directly but Corpus has quite a few international students and the JCR Internationals Officer will be there to help with things relating to being an international student and also organising events to meet others. There will also be plenty of other US students in the university as a whole, I had a few friends from the US during my time there and they all settled in to living and studying in the UK really well.

Generally speaking Corpus is great - really convenient location, lovely buildings and grounds, and being one of the smaller colleges it has a great community vibe too. If it might help at all the JCR website has been recently updated and has lots of info to give you an idea of what Corpus is like for students - for example here's the guide given to the 2023 international freshers http://www.corpusjcr.org/applying/alternative-prospectus/international-students/ which might give you an idea about how starting at Oxford will go! There's loads more info about all aspects of student life on there too.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on Corpus. It means a lot that you took time to share your experience and thoughts about Corpus.

The website seems like a great resources and will definitely read it thoroughly from start to finish. Thank you again for sharing it.

We are planning to visit Oxford as a family in June/July and will check out the campus and the town. Any suggestions on how to make this a fun and fruitful trip?

Thanks.

There are open days on 26th and 27th June. Obviously some of the info will be aimed at people who haven’t yet applied, but there will be current students there answering questions, possibly a chance to meet the tutors, lots of sessions and tours to go to. Departments and Faculty buildings will also be open.
So if you are flexible on when you can travel, this is worth thinking about. But Corpus will be happy to let you in any time if you explain you are an international offer holder who hasn’t yet had the chance to visit

Some colleges rent out rooms to visitors during the vacations, so you could stay in Corpus or another college. NB: student accomodation in Oxford is generally not luxurious.

Visit the Ashmolean Museum and the Science Museum. Go up the tower of St Mary's Church. Check out the chapels at Exeter College and Wadham College. Visit New College, St John's, Trinity, Magdalen, and Merton, or indeed any college.

Have lunch at the Cherwell Boat House, and go punting from there. Go to Blackwell's and see the Norrington Room. Maybe pay for a tour of the Radcliffe Camera and Duke Humphry's Library in the Old Bodleian. Go to the Botanical Gardens.

Do not stay at the Randolph. The Old Bank and the Old Parsonage are better hotels. Drink English beer in the King's Arms, and cocktails in Raoul's. Eat on Walton Street. If you are affluent, go to Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons at Great Milton for dinner. Take a trip to Woodstock and Blenheim Palace.

Have fun!

By the way, there is no campus at Oxford. The colleges and the university buildings are dotted about the city. A college isn't a campus, it's a college!

You can buy a new undergraduate gown at shops on Broad Street or Turl Street, or ask a college porter about second hand gowns.

Good to know. Need to start understanding the UK college concepts

Thanks for sharing that. We will definitely do our best to schedule our visit during those dates. Looks like it might be nice to see the college with all the hustle and bustle going on.

This is some great stuff. Thanks for sharing all the details. We will plan to do all this as part of the trip. It might just be a great experience to live at Corpus rooms but will let the kids decide.
