What should the grade difference be for firm and insurance?

Is putting a uni asking for A*AA as firm and another asking for AAA as insurance risky?

What other offers do you have?

Depends on your predicted grades and how confident you are you can achieve them, how competitive the courses/unis are, whether you can see some likely options in Clearing if it comes to that, or would happily consider a gap year if everything goes pear shaped.

The fact that you are asking suggests this is risky.

That depends on your appetite for risk.

Hardly any applicants end up at their insurance choice because most universities are more flexible than applicants think.

if your AAA university is the only one of your offers that you would be happy to go to aside from your firm then it’s a good insurance choice.

im still in yr12 but i was thinking of applying to the following:

1) cambridge - a*aa
2) lse - aab
3) warwick - aaa
4) ucl - a*aa
5) surrey - abb

So, way too early to be thinking about which of those will even give you an offer and which you are then going to choose for your firm and insurance choices, but a sensible range to be thinking about applying to.
