How to pursue songwriting

I’m graduating school soon and planing to take a gap year. All of my high school years I’ve been focused on my academics and the IB and have got very good grades so was going to pursue a biology/health related degree. However, I’ve always loved music and in the past few years have become interested in songwriting. I’ve tried and tried but haven’t really gotten anywhere with it but would love to write songs. I can play piano and guitar and sing all at a decent level but not particularly amazingly and I would say my theory is somewhat lacking. However, I have recently realised just how much I love music and I would really like to pursue it seriously and be able to write songs but I feel that I need to be taught more theory, songwriting and production. So I would be interested in pursuing a songwriting and production degree but I don’t believe I would get into any college because although I spend a lot of time playing music and really love it, it’s always just been for fun so I only have grade 6 piano and no grades in singing or guitar and I can’t write songs. I also feel that I should pursue a degree in biology and do music on the side so I can fall back on my biology degree but then I also feel I need quite a lot of teaching if I am going to make anything out of my music. So what do I do?

Ultimately, the most important thing is to listen to your instincts and follow your heart. Trust yourself to make the best decision for your future, and don't be afraid to take risks in pursuit of your dreams. Good luck!

You probably are a good singer but music is very competitive and hard to get opportunities so unless you know your parent/guardian 100% willing to support you i would choose the uni path then when you graduate and have a steady income you can pursue music , you can also join a music society in the mean time . hope this helps
