Going to class during A-level exams?

My college is making us come in for lessons during our actual a-level exam period until the 31st of May. I'm not originally from the UK so this seems unusual and unproductive, could any students give me some insight as to why this is a thing, and/or if this is normal across UK colleges?

Mine does the same, but i know some people who just won't turn up because the school can't do anything. I guess it depends on what you would find easiest, but the schools think its best to have teachers there to support the students
