Long Covid And University.

Hello, I hope everyone is doing well.

I am a Year 12 student, and at the end of 2021 ,I got Coronavirus and my health has worsened as a result of this. I have been diagnosed with Long Covid/Post Coronavrius about a few Weeks ago.

We were all affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic, and we all know how difficult it was. With my symptoms, it is very upsetting and frustrating with Cognitive Dysfunction, extreme fatigue, joint pains, extreme mood swings, gastrointestinal changes ;just to name a few symptoms.

I was predicted Grade Nines and Eights-apart from Art- and although I still managed really good grades, I was not able to achieve what I was capable of, which is frustrating. It is also frustrating as I have sports and volunteering outside of school, and even though I get really exhausted, I do not want to quit anything because I feel bad that I am letting people down .

I am worried about my A-Levels because my Cognitive Dysfunction causes Memory loss and recognition problems and, I have always wanted to go to University. However, although I am predicted one set of grades that achieve the entry requirements for courses I would like to apply for, I might not achieve that in the real examinations because of Long Coronavirus.

I am going to be applying to Scottish Universities as my Mum is from Fife and Angus areas, and my parents want to move near my Mum's family while I am at University. I am just worried about applying to University because of my condition. I do not know how well I am going to do in my A-Levels, as although I revise and study, I can just have some Brain Fog and then I would end up rejected because my examinations would go terribly.

Does anyone have any advice on what to put for extenuating circumstances? Or how Universities treat Long Coronavirus because people I have spoken to have given variable responses?

I am so sorry for the long explanation. Thank you so much for reading my long explanation. I hope you have a lovely Day.

Two issues here :

1) Is now the best lime to go to Uni. Would you benefit from a gap year - or even several - before attempting Uni. Remember that you only get one crack at this, and whilst Unis will be sympathetic, you have to be realistic about what it involves and if you can cope with that.

2) If you think you could cope with Uni now, then look at the Mitigating Circumstances process at your intended Unis. This usually involves completing a specific form for each Uni and/or your school sending a formal letter explaining how this has impacted your subsequent studies. This may mean that a Uni can give extra consideration to your existing results, and possibly even your Highers. But it doesnt mean you can get into Uni whatever results you get - or that once you get there you will be allowed to pass anything at a far lower level than anyone else just because of long covid - as above, you need to be realistic about your ability to study a degree, especially if you are already struggling with Highers etc.

Thank you for your response. I get that Universities can only be sympathetic so far, and under no circumstances am I wanting to find an easy way in and just use this problem as an excuse.

I am able to study well, it is just the amount I could do Before has changed during the same Duration. I seem to do well in tests, so maybe there will be some way of training myself to manage my expectations in myself and pace myself more.

I think I am meant to be getting different kinds of treatment Soon, which I am really happy about as I would just like to feel like myself again.

Thank you again for any responses and I hope you have a nice Day.

I would advise trying to maybe talk to the places you volunteer and I'm sure they would let you come less often and maybe look at the sports. As for uni, maybe taking a gap year or doing a part-time year may help if that's possible. Open uni could also be an option to flexibly study.
