NHS and Student Finance Wales

Hey. I am hoping to study mental health nursing in september 24 and have started an application for both student finance wales and the nhs bursary. going down the bursary route, i would only get £4000 (bursary and reduced maintence loan), therefore i attempted to opt out. however, there is not a clear way to opt out on the website. thinking i had successfully opted out, i attempted to apply for a full student finance knowing i would have to pay tuition fees, however it is telling me on the student finance wales website that my tuition fees will be paid for by another body and is giving me the option to apply for the full £9000 maintenance loan. i am really struggling with this so am hoping someone can help me understand what im reading

Do you normally live in Wales?
Yeah there are some issues going on with the NHS bursery, it's not clear if we're able to get the full maintenance loan alongside the bursary yet.

I sent them an email about it and this was their response

"Students can receive the Low maintenance loan from Student finance but as of September 2024, they should receive the maximum amount. However, the decision still currently under review with Welsh Government and hasn’t been finalised yet

Therefore, by the time come to apply for 2024-25 academic year, we are hoping we will have received more information about a decision on this."

Everybody is confused, it's not just you. I've been accepted for the full 11 grand from student finance (with no tuition fees loan) already and I'm mid applying for the NHS grant, but I'm not sure if that's because I did something incorrectly or if I am actually eligible for the full maintenance.

Does anyone know .. will this full maintenance loan be made available to students normally resident in England ( who wish to take up the NHS bursary and work in Wales for 2 years)? At the moment, they only get £2605 maintenance so can't afford to go the bursary route.

No it won't. If you apply for the NHS Wales Bursary, you will only get the reduced maintenance loan of £2,670. It often doesn't make financial sense for an English domiciled student to attend a Welsh uni for a healthcare course. If you attend a uni in England, you would also be able to apply for the annual training grant of £5/6k from the NHS Learning Support Fund.

The amount of reduced maintenance loan was confirmed recently in the following thread:

Thank you. I have called the uni, NHS and student finance about this. I finally get a clear answer here.

This site is where you apply for the NHS bursary, and then you apply to student finance Wales the same way everybody else does!
