Problems with Mold in student accommodation

So I’m a first year living in student accommodation (unite students), I’ve noticed that I’m CONSTANTLY sick, all my symptoms also match with Mold toxicity symptoms (I’m going to get tested for it), I’ve had this issue for a long time but symptoms are getting far worse now (migraines, memory loss/confusion, fatigue, difficulty breathing sometimes, always dizzy, sleep issues) and I do live here full time over holidays too so I haven’t even gone away from the accommodation.

I have black Mold on the ceiling above my bed as well as it constantly being damp and horrible near my bedroom window, I only feel better with the window open and my dehumidifier on. My boyfriend who sometimes stays round has the EXACT same symptoms when he stays here and it’s really hard to cope with, any advice on what I should do?

Hi @pixiebugzie

That doesn't sound very good!

I am glad to hear that you will get tested and hopefully a medical professional will support you.

Have you spoken to Unite Students about it? Has anyone else close to your room/flat reported issues with mould? It's not on and certainly not safe. If I were in your position, I would talk to my university about it, for advice/support.

I really hope this gets sorted for you.

Hi there 👋,

I'm sorry you are experiencing problems with your student accommodation. I'm also glad you sought advice from a healthcare professional about your symptoms.

Depending on your university, it depends on the type of process you can go through to attempt to sort this issue out, here at Wrexham the first port of call is to send a report to the maintenance team to assess the situation. If this has already been done and not to a standard you are happy with, consider asking for the support of your student union or support team.

Hope this helps, good luck with your studies.

Hi there,We're sorry to hear about your black mould situation. Black mould is a serious matter that must be dealt with swiftly. Contact the property's staff or landlord to get rid of the black mould, as it is toxic. Most student accommodation options have on-site staff and, beyond office hours, have emergency hotlines. So contact them to get it sorted. You can also contact them to ask how you can handle it yourself, if possible, and if the infestation is small.
