Mature Returning Student - Will I Get Funding?

Hi team, I was wondering if you could assist and give me an idea of whether Student Finance would allow me to borrow, and if so, how much.

Timeline:

September 2010 - Attended university BSc (3 year course), funded by SF.

April 2011 - Suffered depressive episode.
Proof includes: Doctors note, emails to parents/university staff.

June 2011 - Declined to repeat year due to mental health. Finished year, but did not return. 30 credits obtained.

March 2024 - Completed AHE Course - Level 3

TBD 2024 - Completed level 4 apprenticeship in Data Protection and Information Governance. 16 months part time. Equivalent to HNC. https://findapprenticeshiptraining.apprenticeships.education.gov.uk/courses/676

I am looking to potentially attend university next year, however I have concerns on what I will be able to borrow. I understand that my first year may be restored due to exceptional circumstances, however I am a bit concerned that I may not receive full funding due to my apprenticeship.

The course I want to attend is Law with Business at exeter, which is 3 year degree. https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/law/bbllaw/

Please could you provide me with a rough idea of how much I would be able to borrow?

Many thanks.

Hi there,

Just to confirm. You have studied for 1 full year and left the course? As well you have evidence of your extenuating circumstances?

Thanks, Ross

Hi there,

Regarding your first course, were you awarded credits only at the end, or did you get a degree or certificate of some kind?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme, only credits.

Hi Graeme, only credits.

Thanks, last of all: in total you have one year of full-time study, is that right?

Thanks, Graeme

Yes that is correct.

Yes that is correct.

Thanks for confirming all of this - based on what you've said you'll be entitled to funding for the duration of your new course just fine.

As a student you're entitled to one additional year of funding, which you've used. This means you can study any new course and receive funding for all years.

Your other previous study shouldn't count against you at all.

We'd definitely recommend making an application next year as soon as they're available so we can confirm for definite what you're entitled to.

Thanks, Graeme

Thanks Graeme. So my lvl4 apprenticeship (equivalent to HNC) will also not affect funding?

It will not affect your eligibility for funding. As Graeme advised you would get funding for the duration of the new course.

Thanks, Ross
