Good enough for medical school ?

Hi I achieved 5 x 6 and above at GCSE and had extenuating circumstances (parents divorcing + moving house + undiagnosed autism) but now I am hopefully going to get 3 A’s at A level ? Do you think unis would consider these circumstances or do not have a chance at getting in ? (Have not sat the UCAT yet as in Y12)

Hi! You may have a hard time with Applying depending on how your UCAT goes… Are you Contextual at all?? If so you could have a look at courses with Foundation Years.

If you do well on your UCAT universities will overlook your GCSE grades. Unis tend prioritise UCAT over everything. However, if you get a mediocre score in the UCAT and are competing against other people with the same UCAT scores but better GCSEs, you're ****ed.

And I feel that this is fairly obvious but make sure at least 2 of your predicted grades are A stars, otherwose with those subpar GCSES unis wont even bother looking at your application. If you feel like you can't achieve what I listed, consider changing paths and applying for something different e.g management, economics, etc. Easier degrees with better job prospects that people overlook. Sorry to be so brutal but its in your best interest to actually know what you need to achieve and decide whether or not you can do it, as if you can't, changing career paths is honestly going to be an upgrade (medicicine is long hard and underpaid)

ucat is important and many different medical schools have different shortlisting strategies - you just have to apply strategically. My friend who got 2600 and same GCSEs got all 4 med offers bc she applied strategically as opposed to my 2800 friend who applied not so strategically and is taking a gap year

You don’t have to get 2 A*s… many unis don’t look at your a levels and GCSEs beyond making sure you have the min requirements - they’ll rank purely on UCAT eg Bristol Manchester Newcastle, there should be a pdf document for all the medical schools entry requirement online

Also make sure to get in work experience supercurriculars and extracurriculars to demonstrate the skills you need to be a doctor with

Yeah medical applicant here with three interviews! I completely agree with this person, you could even be predicted AAB and unis wouldn’t care bc many unis don’t think predicted grades are accurate. Depending on which uni it is they’ll jus look at UCAT and minimum GCSE requirements which is often grade 6 or above and then your mmi interview score and make an offer for AAA OR A*AA but you don’t have to be predicted those jus be confident that you’ll get the grades on results day

If you did actually get 77788 and not 66666 then yeah I think you have a better chance of getting in
