Student from the US

Hi! I'm currently in high school in the US, and I'm a junior (year 12). I plan on applying to UCL, Cambridge University, University of Kent, and Imperial College London next year, but I was wondering what it's like to attend these schools? I'm familiar with the University of Kent and the surrounding areas because my mom is from there but I have no clue about the rest. I would ideally like to avoid as many snooty/stuck up people as possible. I'm not worried about any financials, just the social aspect. Thanks!

What course are you thinking of studying? I study here at Kingston, which I find location wise is a great balance. It is just outside of the centre of London just a 25 minute train ride to Vauxhall/Waterloo, so it is a great opportunity to explore London, but you are a nice distance away that you are not always in the centre where it can get quite busy. Kingston itself is filled with nature, it is right on the Thames and there are lots of nice restaurants along the river. So it's like the best of both worlds.

When it comes to people, I have met some amazing people and what's great about Kingston is there are students from all over the world not just London. I am from the north of England and so before coming to Kingston I was a little worried everyone would be from the south and around London and so already know London well, but I found it was a great mixture of people from all over.

Kingston may be a university to consider! Let me know what course you are thinking so we can give some insight on the course and feel free to ask any more questions you may have :smile:

It is great to hear that you are already searching for University options, and that you are considering studies at Kent. 🙂 I am a current final year law student at Kent, hopefully I can give you some insights into what it is like to study here. 😀 (I am a law student, what degree are you interested in studying?)

At Kent, we have a good work-life balance, even for a course that is considered quite content heavy, I have always found the course structure quite nice. Many of my non-law friends have also echoed this too. 🙂 For studies, there is always support available from peers, seminar leaders, lecturers, and academic advisors. This makes studying quite enjoyable at Kent. I always feel comfortable approaching my teachers for help should I need it.

As for social life at Kent, there are many student hosted societies that host a range of events throughout the year. For example: art and crafts, sports, cultural, and subject-based societies. I am sure you will find something which interest you and meet new people with similar hobbies. The students at Kent are lovely, so are the teachers. Given the diverse background which students come from, I think you will be able to find your group of friends. 😀 In general, UK universities have a lot of international and non-local students. So I do not think you have to worry about meeting snooty people. As a BAME student, I was initially quite nervous about attending University, however, the diversity at University is a huge step up from Year 12/ 13 and I have really enjoyed the University experience so far.

Hi there,

It's great that you're planning to come to the UK for university! Studying abroad is an incredible experience, and I'm sure you'll love it.

I don't know a lot about these universities, but asking current students on this platform is definitely a good idea. You could also talk to current students on a platform called 'Unibuddy', which many of these universities should have on their websites. This way, you could find someone from your home country or who is studying the same subject as you, and ask them more specific questions.
