Student Finance Discussion

Hi there,
I want to get some advice.
Bit of context, in 2022 I started university and only stayed there until January 2023 as I withdraw due to a really bad mental health episode. I was contacted by SLC saying I had an overpayment of around £2,700 which they eventually paused for me midway through 2023. It was also during this time I applied for a new course more suited to be studying alongside work. I have been in this course since September 2023 but I want to change and my course leader is going to withdraw me once the first year is complete.

I am now applying to do Primary Education with QTS.

Now I have some main questions I need clarifying:

1: I am aware of the 3 years +1 (- previous study) so that would leave me with years 2 and 3 full study support. I am applying for Compelling Personal Reasons as we speak but if unsuccessful, I'll have to fund myself through savings. What is the success rate of CPR?

2: As I've studied now twice before (2022-2023 despite being only a few months I know it's classed as a year of funding) and now 2023-2024, is there going to be an additional overpayment to the one I've got paused as I'm leaving this course for primary ed despite leaving at the end of the first year?

3: Despite having an overpayment, I wish to live back in halls if I can for first year as I am in a better mindset. I've heard several things but does the overpayment effect my maintenance loan, as do the previous years of study? If I owe £2700, and my living costs for a flat are top end £6000, will I get that deducted from my entitled maintenance loan unless I start to pay it off?

4: Are my untouched years 2 and 3 full funding and tuition fees untouched despite my 1st year restarts. Eg. My maintenance loans are being taken off years 2 and 3 to cover etc...

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hi there,

Can you confirm the name of the university you will attend and the duration of the course? Do you hold Qualified Teacher Status? Compelling Personal Reasons will be looked at on a case by case basis and an assessor will make a decision based on the evidence that your provide. Overpayments are usually deducted from your future Maintenance Loan and this will happen automatically once we assess your application.

Thanks, Drew

Hi there, We would take your 2 years of previous study into consideration when assessing your application. You’re entitled to funding for the length of your course, plus 1 additional year, minus any years of previous study you have. Here’s the calculation we used: 3+1-2=2 years of funding left for the Tuition Fee Loan and this would be allocated to years 2 and 3 if your course. You can apply for the Maintenance Loan for all 3 years of your course.

If you could not complete your course year due to a compelling personal reason, you may be able to receive an additional year of funding if you provide evidence of this. This evidence can be uploaded from your Online Account.

We can accept photocopies of the following;
-Medical evidence from a GP on headed paper
-Letter from HEP on headed paper
-Letter from Social Services on headed paper
-Letter from clergy or professional person on headed paper
-Death Certificate and/or a Birth Certificate

Where applicable, we recommend evidence;
-Is signed and dated
-Confirms the reason why you could not continue with your studies and
- When this took place

Thanks, Drew
