Hi! I’m a first year student studying VFX, and it’s an incredibly rewarding and interesting subject. My teachers are really smart and great, I liked being on set and i love my uni too. However, the more I do VFX and the more I read about the industry, the less I want to actually work in this field. While I can work hard and get good grades, I am not passionate about this subject, and am not curious about shooting films or learning more code and IT related things etc. I keep going back to my passion for biology and animals, something I thought I wouldn’t be able to do at university due to not having a Chemistry A-Level and not having enough knowledge about foundation courses available for other degrees. I really also did want to try out the film industry, but now the more I think about it the more I worry about an unstable future with freelancing and long hours in a career that I’m really actually not that interested in. I want to try switching to a Zoology or Wildlife Conservation course, but again because I don’t have chemistry that limits my choices, and since I have already spent a year of funding I wouldn’t be able to do foundation, so I am really kicking myself as I got an A* for Biology and would be going to universities that require a B or C…. Perhaps I could do a masters in a Russel Group??
I think whatever choice I make I will always be left wandering ‘what if?’, and I’m not sure about career prospects for each course. Working in a film set and around creative people in marketing seemed like a great job during my placement, but also I feel like in the future if i do want to go that route i can do shorter courses to try and break into the industry. But also working in ecology and zoology with clients and surveying plants and animals seems like a really good learning environment as I am naturally curious about biology and it seems like the jobs would be a lot more stable rather than the contract- based hours of VFX, especially in the current climate post-strikes.
Should I finish my VFX degree or switch to Zoology?
Any advice you could give would be really helpful!!
