Switching from VFX to Zoology??

Hi! I’m a first year student studying VFX, and it’s an incredibly rewarding and interesting subject. My teachers are really smart and great, I liked being on set and i love my uni too. However, the more I do VFX and the more I read about the industry, the less I want to actually work in this field. While I can work hard and get good grades, I am not passionate about this subject, and am not curious about shooting films or learning more code and IT related things etc. I keep going back to my passion for biology and animals, something I thought I wouldn’t be able to do at university due to not having a Chemistry A-Level and not having enough knowledge about foundation courses available for other degrees. I really also did want to try out the film industry, but now the more I think about it the more I worry about an unstable future with freelancing and long hours in a career that I’m really actually not that interested in. I want to try switching to a Zoology or Wildlife Conservation course, but again because I don’t have chemistry that limits my choices, and since I have already spent a year of funding I wouldn’t be able to do foundation, so I am really kicking myself as I got an A* for Biology and would be going to universities that require a B or C…. Perhaps I could do a masters in a Russel Group??

I think whatever choice I make I will always be left wandering ‘what if?’, and I’m not sure about career prospects for each course. Working in a film set and around creative people in marketing seemed like a great job during my placement, but also I feel like in the future if i do want to go that route i can do shorter courses to try and break into the industry. But also working in ecology and zoology with clients and surveying plants and animals seems like a really good learning environment as I am naturally curious about biology and it seems like the jobs would be a lot more stable rather than the contract- based hours of VFX, especially in the current climate post-strikes.

Should I finish my VFX degree or switch to Zoology?
Any advice you could give would be really helpful!!

What are your other A level subjects? Unis such as Nottingham and York for zoology and ecology require a second science but don't specify chemistry.

In terms of funding, the calculation when starting a new course is: length of new course +1 (gift year) - previous study. So if you wanted to start a new course with an integrated foundation year, you could be funded for the whole course as long as you withdraw from your current course by the end of first year. Bear in mind that the equal consideration for UCAS applications has already passed and some courses will be closed to applications now. Another option is take a year out and complete an Access to HE diploma in a relevant subject and apply to uni for 2025 entry.

My other subjects are Graphic Design and Media Studies; I really regret Media as while it was such a fun and interesting subject it clearly isn't useful at all :frown:
I've been looking into doing an Ecology and Wildlife Conservation degree instead of Zoology as those usually only require Biology.

Thank you for the info on Student Finance, that's incredibly helpful!!

Hey there ☺️ I'm a current zoology student here at the University of Plymouth, so it's great to hear you're interested in zoology or other biological/wildlife conservation subjects!

Switching subject areas can seem like a challenge but it's definitely possible and great to see you're following your passion and desired career choice! Here at Plymouth, many of our courses have foundation years, allowing you to change your subject area with little experience or limited relevant qualifications (e.g. only one relevant science subject), so they are worth considering. It's also a good idea to contact university admissions teams to discuss with them whether they might allow you to apply for a subject (either initially or through clearing) with just biology and no second science subject if you can show your interest and passion for the course. If you're interested, I'd recommend contacting [email protected] to see what the could suggest about similar courses, such as zoology, conservation biology, and biological sciences.

Best of luck and if you have any questions, feel free to let me know! 😀
