hey zak
with regards to work experience, places are usually very limited. I don't live in Birmingham but I contacted around 10-15 practices to enquire about work experience: only one replied. could be seen as somewhat unprofessional, but appears to be pretty standard within this field as I have many friends who had the same or similar experiences.
with that in mind, it'll probably be best to contact as many medium to large sized practices in your area as possible.
best of luck

Gensler, Arup, Jacobs, Howells, BDP, AHR are all big firms with offices in Birmingham; Howells is also taking applications for its summer school programme in July at the moment

https://www.howells.uk/join-us

also RIBA does 1 day workshops and events for young people, i did a few when I was in secondary school and they were good fun and good for CV/personal statement too
