Am I allowed a Calculator for university Computer Science exams?

I am interested in studying computer science at university (such as Birmingham, York and Warwick), but am unsure whether I am allowed a Calculator for the exams.

I've searched countless times on Google but cannot find an explicit answer so if there are any university Computer Science students reading these please let me know. Thanks 😀

Hey there,

It's great to hear that you're considering studying computer science at universities like Birmingham, York, and Warwick! As for your question about calculators in exams, I can offer some insights based on my experience at the University of Salford, and generally across computer science programs.

In many computer science exams, including those at my university, the use of calculators varies depending on the specific exam and the requirements set by the lecturer. For example, exams like Data Mining may allow calculators, while exams like Data Structures and Algorithms may not.

At the University of Salford, our lecturers make it clear in advance which resources, including calculators, are allowed, or required for each exam. This helps students prepare appropriately and avoid any surprises on exam day. If a calculator is permitted, it's typically limited to a scientific calculator to prevent any unfair advantages due to programmable features available on graphical calculator.

In exams where calculators aren't allowed, the questions are usually designed to focus more on problem-solving and critical thinking rather than complex calculations. This ensures that all students have a fair chance to demonstrate their understanding of the material.

While I can't speak specifically for the universities you mentioned, I recommend reaching out directly to their computer science departments or checking their official exam regulations for clarification. Additionally, if any current computer science students from those universities are reading, I encourage them to share their experiences regarding calculators in exams.

I hope this helps provide some clarity, and I wish you the best of luck in your future studies!

Best Regards,
Arslan University of Salford Student Representative

I'd think so seeing as the place is in the name of the universities but I haven't looked whether they are actually in those areas or slightly outside.

I don’t think the universities are named after a place. There just happens to be a town/city that also shares the same name as the university.

You from the UK? Those universities are in those cities (with the exception of warwick which is a small distance from warwick city). Are you rage baiting or something or are you just plain stupid
