Lancaster University

Hi! Im planning on applying to Lancaster next year, but have a couple of questions and it would be great if someone who studies there could help!
1. Is it a good uni? Is it a well respected uni, as it has lower entry requirements for many courses than other unis?
2. Is the accommodation good? And am i guaranteed accommodation as a first year student?
3. How is Lancaster town? Is there things to do at the weekend or can it get boring as it is quite a small place?
4. How much do busses into town from uni cost?
Also, does anyone know anything about the law school?
Hi anon,
Im a final year student so I will try my best to answer these for you

1.

It is a very reputable uni, and the main reason the course requirements are usually low is because it is a very small town and although nice, not particularly exciting. It is a long way north and quite far from any bigger cities there are organized strips to Manchester for shopping and big clubs, for example but it is an hour away. The actual campus is attractive and well designed though, and the city is friendly and getting bigger.

2.

Yes, you are guaranteed accommodation on campus as a first year student. The accommodation is quite well and most of it is newly renovated and quite cheap as compared to other bigger cities like London and Manchester. The rooms are nice and clean, quite spacious and come with all the basic amenities needed. You can get different room sizes and types of accommodations based on your requirement.

3.

The town as mentioned is quite small, but very safe because it is a student town. There are two universities in Lancaster and couple grammar schools so most of the population is students and teens. So it doesn’t only feel safe, but it also has a very student vibe. We have three clubs - one of them student union run and the other one is a general club, but as mentioned because most of the population are students, so there are mostly students in there too. The town does get a little quieter, towards the other weekday evenings, but there are farmers markets and a lot of families and students are around.

4.

As an under 19, you can get a day rider for just £3.20 and singles are £2. There is a special bus service that runs on Wednesdays and Fridays between 1 AM to 5 AM specifically for traveling between university and clubs and it only cost £1.

5.

I wouldn’t be able to be of much help as I’m a computer science student, but I do have many friends who study law and they seem quite content with the course.

I hope this helps and if you have any further questions, please let me know

Hi Anon,
I'm a 3rd year geography student at Lancaster, so hopefully ill provide an insight into these questions.

1.

I've really enjoyed my time at Lancaster. The university is well respected and consistently ranks highly in terms of UK universities.

2.

If you put Lancaster as your firm choice you are guaranteed on campus accommodation in your 1st year. The accommodation is really nice, in my 1st year i lived in a shared bathroom flat with 7 other people, our flat had been newly renovated and was spacious and clean. There's lots of storage in your rooms, with a large wardrobe and desk area which is very useful and there is a cleaner which regularly cleans the flats communal spaces. There's other types of accommodation like ensuites, studios and townhouses (which tend to be quite popular). I've attached a link to the website which shows the different options. Undergraduate - Lancaster University. Theres also a lettings agency called 'Lancaster university homes' which is based on campus and can help you find accommodation for your 2nd and 3rd year in town.

3.

Lancaster is quite a small city, but there's a good range of cafes, bars and shops, there's usually lots of events happening in town over the weekend to get involved in. Also Lancaster is close to the major cities of manchester and liverpool as well as the Lake district for a day trip.

4.

The buses cost £2 single or you can get a under 19 day rider for £3.20. The buses run very frequently between the town and campus. Also, there's the option to buy a bus pass in 2nd and 3rd year when your commuting to campus more as this works out cheaper.

If you've got any more questions about lancaster feel free to ask!

Hi i can hopefully answer some of your questions as im a first year law student

It is a really good Uni especially for Law, all of my lecturers are so kind and great teachers for various different reasons. The support you have from the law school in particular is amazing, ive been able to have financial help, support with my medical conditions, support with the work, pretty much everything.

The accomodation I will say is pretty good especially for a Uni accom, you are guaranteed accomodation, but not always your first choice of college it depends on how popular it is, but I havent met anyone who didnt get their first or second choice this year.

The town itself is alright it has some shops and there is stuff to do, we have three clubs as well for students if that is something you were interested in. I do know a lot of people who go down to Manchester as well which is fun. Me and some of my flatmates are going to go up to Lake District in the summer, so there is stuff to do. You could also go to Morecambe which has arcades, bowling, pottery painting etc.

If you do have any more questions, in particular about the law school or starting Uni in general let me know
