Personally, I find larger essays more challenging, but I completely understand where you're coming from. Trying to be concise about topics that do require a bit of depth to dicuss well is extremely difficult. You never know if you're saying the right thing, or if you're actually fitting all the information you need into the word count.
Usually my approach to essays with strict word counts is to constantly keep track of how many words I've already used throughout the process of my writing. When I know I'm close to reaching the maximum amount, I immediately stop writing and see where I can cut down and summarise; this means I never go too far over the word count, and therefore have less to cut down than if I'd written 600 words and had to reduce it by half.
Although, I will admit I haven't had too many essays with small word counts in the past year or so - I'm a little jealous! 🤣

yeah I get that for me it depends on how big is big say 3/4000 versus 2000 especially when they account for the same amount of credit as the larger one. Very big is obviously very challenging.
I'm not sure I could do it your way though if I'm honest, how do you know what's to come if you stop? do you assign a word limit per section within the word limit?
For more context, I had to summarise (and justify) the research into this amount of words, so it felt like "but thats so important" for way too much time.
I appreciate you taking the time to offer your thoughts
