Applying for dental therapy course 2025

Hi guys!
I’m hoping to apply to a dental hygiene and therapy course next year, I’ve been unsuccessful this year (which I had a feeling I would) due to not having the entry requirements.
At the moment, I am a qualified dental nurse I have been a nurse since 2020 and got my qualification early 2023. Since then I have completed a level 2 infection control certificate and promoted to decontamination lead in my workplace, applied to volunteer with dentaid and brightbites , currently taking a level 4 OHE course, and soon to start an access to HE course in September.
I also keep up to date with as much info as I can relating to changes in dentistry.
I’ll also be attending open days to the unis I’m interested in this year.
So basically, is there anything else I can do to strengthen my application? I am so passionate about one day enrolling onto the therapy course, so any help would be appreciated:smile:
Thanks xx

Honestly! I’ve been through so many posts on here and there is such a range of people who have applied with less experience, so I think it hugely depends on the person and whether or not they have the determination to successfully get through the course. I think the hardest part for me will be getting through the interview (if I get one next year) and actually showing how passionate I am x

Hey I got one offer this year which is conditional so hopefully I meet the A-level requirements 😭but honestly I just did some volunteering , online work experience & other stuff in college e.g. being a ambassador etc. I honestly think you really do have a lot of experience & passion for this course so I would just say reflect on your application or interviews & maybe ask a dentist or someone to check your personal statement I just had mine checked by my biology teacher who helps people apply to dentistry etc but honestly don’t give up when I get 4 rejections I thought that’s it but literally a day later I got a offer:smile:

Which universities are you interested in? Check their websites to ensure that you meet minimum requirements before applying! Also double check by emailing the dental admissions teams of said unis if they accept your specific HE course- that way you aren’t wasting any of your 5 choices on universities who’s requirements you won’t meet. If you want any more specific advice feel free to contact me on direct message. I got 3/5 interviews and 2/5 offers. I have accepted an unconditional offer for dental therapy and dental hygiene and I’m starting in September. I am also a dental nurse but had 3 A-levels including biology before I qualified as a dental nurse. I know how overwhelming admissions were for me and I managed to get in my first application cycle, so can help out if you have questions.

Hi guys,

I’m in a similar situation I am a qualified dental nurse, also have NEBDN Dental Radiography qualification. I have 5 GCSE at C&above including maths&english. I am taking a distance learning access to HE health professionals and GCSE Biology as I do not have a science GCSE.

I wish to apply for Birmingham as my first choice. Does anyone know if it’s hard to get it? And if distance learning courses can be a problem or not?

I’ve already emailed Liverpool University as that is my 1st choice, and they do accept HE courses! Xx

Hi,

I am looking at OHE and I was wondering if you could let me know if in your opinion it's possible to do it in less than 9 months? And also, does it require to be in a full-time DN job or a part-time could work too? And finally, what the practice needs to do? Thanks so much for your help!

Definitely can do it in less than 9 months. Ask your work if they can put you on the course. My work did and I did it within 6 months. It’s coursework based like our dental nurse diploma and there’s an exam at the end. I’m full time but I don’t think you need to be to do the course

Great, super useful, thanks! I've started my course and it's going well! Now, I can apply to unis with few new tricks, finger crossed!
