Student Finance for postgrad

Hello,

I’m currently a final year student at university & my student finance schedule is on a January intake despite my current course being an October start as I had to repeat a year & my university stopped doing the January intake altogether so they transferred to the October start during my repeat year.

So my question is, I want to do my masters with an October 2024 start, will I still be able to receive funding for my postgrad as normal? Only asking as my final maintenance & tuition payment for my undergrad lands in October despite me graduating in July. Will this clash with my postgrad loan?

Hi there,

If you've never studied Post Graduate before you would be eligible for support. If the courses overlap this can cause an issue with the funding.

Thanks, Ross

Can you explain by overlapping? Because on my SFE portal my current course is put down as a 2023/2024 intake, I will be receiving my final payment for my final year in October. I’m planning to go into the October 2024/2025 intake for my postgrad. I’ve also been told by my university that the student finance for postgrads is different to the undergraduate as it goes to me directly rather than the university, so I’m just wondering if I will still receive funding for a postgrad for a October 2024 start, especially if I’ve completed my undergraduate degree by July 2024.

Hi there,

You can only receive finance for 1 course at a time, so if you're on an undergraduate course still when your postgraduate starts, you wouldn't receive finance for postgraduate till your undergraduate is finished officially based on term dates the university advise us on the system.

Thanks,
Claire

Hello, so if I were to begin my postgrad in October anyways, and pay for my tuition monthly myself, will I be able to still apply for my postgrad once the term dates are over ? so for example my last payment to my university for my undergrad is 16th October, the postgrad starts on 3rd October, so after the 16th October will I be able to apply for my postgrad loan as all the payments have been done ? As I’m aware the postgrad loan is to me directly & not the university?

Or should I just wait until 2025 to do a postgrad instead

Hi there. For the eligibility, we look at the overlap period from the course start and end dates. With this, we would not look at payments made for Tuition Fee but rather it would show that you were still on the Undergraduate course at the point you started the Postgraduate which would make you ineligible. In this case, you are better speaking to the University, if there is a later intake for the Postgraduate you could apply for this or wait until the next Academic Year. Thanks, David
