The Student Room Group

UNI: Would you live in:

A place which is 440 PCM, doesn't include bills, live with 4 other people, but the door you have doesn't include a lock.

or

A place 695, includes bills, is aesthetic, doesn't have a desk, the door locks.

My daughter’s in Bristol.

I suggest you work out all your potential expenses for both places (such as travel costs and bills, as well as rent) then you can really compare.

I think this decision depends on:
how well you know/trust housemates and their friends
how much disposable income you have, and
how safe the area is.

If you want to insure your stuff, you need a room lock.

Last year my girl was paying approximately £750 PCM excluding bills of £100 per month, so 850PCM in total. None of the bedroom doors had a lock but the windows and main doors were very secure. It was a shared house in a very low crime area near public transport, but walking distance to her campus, food shops and her work, so 0 travel costs.

440PCM excluding bills sounds extremely cheap! Is there a catch? How safe is the area? If your bills are similar to my daughter’s, that would work out around 540PCM.
695 including bills is reasonable for Bristol. You could get a good quality desk for free from a recycling website, or a cheap secondhand one from a charity shop or secondhand.

Most of all, think about your safety and security of your stuff. You need peace of mind to study and live happily.

Good luck!

Thank you, it is in Filton Abbey Wood, Horfield, not the best area. Plus it is with 4 randos uni students!

Don’t leave the decision too long as places get taken very fast.
Good luck!
